The Clinical Instructor has responsibility for teaching primarily in the clinical and laboratory settings and also in the classroom; incorporates evidence-based practice into teaching activities and maintains a commitment to serving the School of Nursing (SON). Applicants must have completed the SON compliance requirements for faculty teaching in the clinical setting and any additional compliance requirements of the institutions where clinical teaching is assigned including but not limited to a background check, documentation of vaccinations and titers, and required training. Starting salary is dependent on years of demonstrated teaching experience, degree, and the evaluation of the program director.

This role requires demonstrated knowledge, competence, and experience in a specialty area of practice as a direct care provider and clinical educator. The role requires excellent organizational, written, and oral interpersonal communication skills. This position reports to the Clinical Coordinator for the MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program.

Responsibilities

TEACHING

  • Responsible for teaching in the clinical, lab, and classroom settings including simulation approaches to teaching in the pre-licensure and MSN post-licensure Programs as assigned by the Executive Vice Dean and relevant Program Directors.
  • Maintains current clinical competency and knowledge of current evidence in the literature required to teach in the clinical, lab, and classroom settings assigned.
  • Maintains current curriculum vitae (CV) according to the SON CV format.
  • Follows the direction of the relevant program directors regarding the adoption of teaching approaches to achieve academic program outcomes.
  • Works under the direction of the Theory Course Coordinator when serving as Clinical Course Coordinator to ensure integration of the theory and clinical content of the course.
  • Works under the direction of the Clinical Course Coordinator or Lab Course Coordinator when leading a clinical or laboratory group.
  • Attends course planning meetings as directed by the Clinical Course Coordinator or Course Coordinator.
  • Completes all training as directed by the Clinical Course Coordinator, Course Coordinator or Program Director.
  • Meets all compliance requirements of the clinical sites assigned.
  • Attends orientation for the clinical sites assigned.
  • Ensures that all students in the assigned clinical group have completed compliance requirements for the assigned clinical site.
  • Applies principles of adult learning and evidence-based practice.
  • Prepares and submits incident reports related to student exposures according to site and SON policies.
  • Takes students to the Occupational Health Clinic following exposures as directed by the Infectious Disease or Occupational Health official at the clinical site.
  • Adheres to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) that protects the privacy of student educational records.
  • Works collaboratively with nurse managers, staff nurses, and other representatives of the clinical units assigned.
  • Meets with students as requested or when necessary to address student performance concerns.
  • Works closely with students’ academic advisor, Course Coordinator, Clinical coordinator for the MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program, and Program Director when a student’s performance in clinical/lab/course places the student at risk for failure.
  • Provides students with a recommended plan for academic improvement as needed and follows up to determine if student performance improves.
  • Provides timely feedback to students on their clinical/lab/course progress.
  • Initiates a clinical/lab/course warning if appropriate.
  • Participates in relevant Progression Committee meetings for students who have not achieved academic success in the course.
  • Communicates in writing with students, Course Coordinator, Clinical Coordinator for the MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program, relevant Program Director, and student’s academic advisor if the student is not passing at midterm or at the end of the course.
  • Orients, mentors and evaluates part-time clinical instructors in their teaching role if serving as a Clinical Course Coordinator.
  • Takes on a clinical group for an absent clinical instructor if serving in the Clinical Course Coordinator role.
  • Communicates concerns about non-academic student issues to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs
  • Participates in preparation for and activities during academic program accreditation.


SERVICE

  • Participates in all open houses, special student days, orientation, degree completion ceremonies and graduations unless excused by the Department Chair.
  • Demonstrates teaching approaches in the simulation lab for visitors or potential students.
  • Serves on departmental and school committees as assigned by the Clinical Coordinator for the MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program.
  • Participates in professional activities such as being a member of a professional organization associated with the clinical instructor’s clinical practice specialty.


PRACTICE

  • Develops a plan annually with the Clinical Coordinator for the MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program in collaboration with the MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program Director for maintaining the clinical competency required to meet SON teaching needs.


Current licensure as a registered nurse in good standing in Maryland

  • Doctoral degree in nursing
  • Ability to comply with the Technical Standards Policy for Instructors
  • Experience in a nursing practice role
  • Experience in a clinical teaching role
  • Documented effectiveness in collaboration and communication
  • Ability to effectively manage details and problem solve in a complex environment
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so at Johns Hopkins University SON


Able to travel to clinical facilities in the Baltimore-Washington area

PREFERRED
Experience in higher education including teaching, simulation instruction, accreditation, program review or assessment

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
