Job Description:

The Associate Director of Career and Professional Development – Pre-Health Professions provides guidance and support to students and alumni interested in pursuing clinical healthcare professions and careers in the healthcare industry. The Associate Director leads the Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) and collaborates with faculty to prepare student and alumni applicants for pre-health graduate/professional school program recruitment and application cycles. They advise in the areas of academic success and professional development, establishing links between students and graduate school admissions offices, employers, alumni and professional practitioners. The Associate Director also develops and executes events and programs related to CPD student support initiatives.

Essential Functions:
  • Serves as personal and professional development advisor to current students and alumni interested in pre-health professions for summer, professional full-time, and post-graduate academic opportunities.

  • Leads the Health Professions Advisory Committee in partnership with the HPAC faculty chair in stewarding the pre-health preparation process for students. Collaborates with committee members to collect, review, and finalize recommendations for medical school, dental school, veterinary school, and other health graduate program candidates from W&L.

  • In collaboration with department heads in Biology, Chemistry, Cognitive and Behavioral Science, and Physics, ensures appropriate frequency and availability of requisite pre-health courses.

  • Serves as a supplemental academic advisor on pre-health coursework. In addition, provides individual and group advising each application cycle with special emphasis on entrance exam preparation, application review, community engagement, and clinical experience.

  • Collects, analyzes, and reports data on pre-health student applications, outcomes and matriculation.

  • Manages pre-health and other related communities in the CPD Canvas course and other CPD communication channels.

  • Develops, collects and maintains career resource material for pre-health students.

  • Serves as the primary advisor to student pre-health organizations.

  • Develops, plans, markets, and executes professional development and industry-specific workshops, events and programs, career trips, and other events.

  • Engages and manages alumni career volunteers in the healthcare field.

  • Liaises with key internal partners (e.g., pre-health faculty and committee members, Office of Alumni Engagement, University Advancement, faculty and staff) and external partners (e.g., admissions representatives, recruiters, alumni) to create a culture of collaboration among a variety of stakeholders across the University.

  • Attends regional and national meetings for health professions advisors.

  • Promotes and Practices NACE Principles of Professional Conduct.

  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: M-F, 8:30am - 4:30pm, some evening and weekend hours required.

Minimum Pay: $66,037 - Pay commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Three or more years of progressively strategic, full-time experience in college/university advising or career services. Expertise in academic advising and graduate school application support for pre-health students is advantageous. In the absence of higher education experience, a combination of education and relevant experience providing a similar background and capabilities will be considered.

  • Knowledge of career fields relevant to liberal arts graduates and alumni.

  • Academic or professional experience in a healthcare field preferred.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills having a demonstrated ability to follow through.

  • Candidates who do not have the requisite years of experience noted in Minimum Qualifications may be considered for the position at the Assistant Director level.
