Job Description
The Virginia Tech School of Architecture, based in the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design, invites applications for Visiting Assistant Professor to teach in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to history and theory as relates to design education.
The School of Architecture emphasizes experimentation, cross-disciplinary viewpoints, and hands-on learning to develop future design professionals able to think systemically, integrate diverse ideas, and adapt to a constantly changing environment, all the while building a firm foundation in the cultural and physical dimensions of design, urban design, history, theory, building sciences, and practice.

The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester. The courses would include the required histories of architecture survey and contemporary topics course in one semester, and the required histories of architecture survey and an elective offering in the other. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the overall learning environment in the school by attending school-wide lectures, reviewing student work, and participating in faculty meetings and other service. The Visiting Assistant Professor position is a nine-month appointment, for a duration of two academic years, beginning in August 2023 and renewable based on need and performance
Required Qualifications
● A strong academic background in architectural history and theory is required. Candidates should either have completed a Ph.D. degree in architecture or architectural history or should be in “all but dissertation” (ABD) status towards obtaining their Ph.D. (candidates who have not yet completed their Ph.D. must hold a terminal masters degree).
● Previous teaching experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
● Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarship.
● Previous experience in teaching large lecture courses is desirable.
