Job Description

The Department of Agriculture is seeking applicants for a nine-month, non-tenure track faculty member to start in August 2023. We seek someone to serve as an instructor of animal science and the coach of the FHSU Livestock Judging Team. Our new colleague will teach courses that may include: Animal science, Techniques of livestock selection and evaluation, Livestock sales, Sheep production and management, Horse production, Swine production and management. While some online instruction may be required, this position is in-person on the campus of Fort Hays State University.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach 6-9 credit hours a semester;
  • Coach the competitive FHSU Livestock Judging Team;
  • Coordinate and implement competitive team travel and practice/work/chore schedules;
  • Assist in the maintenance and coordination of animal herds and facilities at the university farm;
  • Assist in the development of on-campus and online courses;
  • Assist with departmental events, clubs and teams;
  • Travel to various high schools, conferences, and other sites for recruitment;
  • Oversee program website and social media;
  • Develop camps, workshops, or field days for instructors and/or youth groups;
  • Cultivate and develop relationships with alumni groups, business, industry, community.
  • Willingness to travel, primarily weekends, with the judging team;
  • The ability and willingness to teach via different modalities, including online;
  • Other service in support of the Livestock Judging Team, the Department of Agriculture, and FHSU.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s Degree in agriculture or related field or HLC qualified;
  • Valid driver's license required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of livestock herds, livestock industry, and livestock evaluation;
  • Evidence of success training livestock judging in a competitive format;
  • Evidence of success in competitive livestock judging;
  • Knowledge of collegiate livestock judging rules;
  • Experience with recruiting;
  • Evidence of success teaching and/or mentoring undergraduate students;
  • A record of successful fundraising.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT :

The Department of Agriculture has eight full-time faculty positions serving more than 400 undergraduate students pursuing Bachelor of Science degrees in Agriculture or Agricultural Business with the latter available online. The Agriculture major includes options in Agricultural Education, Agronomy, Animal Science, Agricultural Leadership, Agricultural Communications, Business Agronomy and General Agriculture. Classified staff employees oversee individual operations (beef, sheep, swine, and dryland crop production) on a 3,825-acre University Farm. This facility is available to provide students with access to hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that complement the classroom experience. ABOUT THE COLLEGE : The Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics (WCOSTM) was formed in 2015 by aggregating the departments of Agriculture, Applied Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geosciences, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as the Sternberg Museum of Natural History and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. The academic units consist of approximately 75 full-time faculty, 1400 undergraduate majors, and 50 graduate students. Undergraduate students participate in technical, classroom, field, and lab experiences that many universities would reserve for graduate students. The wide range of academic programs are innovative, and college faculty embrace a one-on-one teaching and mentoring philosophy, while providing robust scholarship opportunities for our students.
