Schedule Information : This position teaches a standard load of fifteen (15) credit hours per semester (30 credits per academic year). This may include release time to be given for chair/coordinator duties. Classes may be offered in day, evening, and/or online modalities. Instructors are also expected to hold weekly office hours on campus to be available for student support.

This position is a one-year appointment and may be considered for an additional one-year renewal.

Weeks per fiscal year : Faculty are covered under a 9-month contract period (August thru May)

Position Description and Duties :

Harper College is one of the nation’s premier community colleges and one of the largest, serving approximately 30,000 students annually in Chicago’s northwest suburbs. The College’s academic programs prepare students for rewarding careers and for transfer to four-year universities. Harper offers associate degree and certification programs, advanced career programs, workforce training, professional development, continuing education classes, accelerated degree options for adults and developmental education programs. In 2022, Harper also received the distinction of being recognized as a Top 25 semifinalist for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

Responsible for teaching Adult Basic Education, Pre-HSE, HSE and or ELA courses using instructional methods focused on the adult learner in a classroom setting. Prepare syllabus and plan lessons based on the learning needs of students who are culturally diverse and multi-skill level. Classroom instructions provided will assist in preparing students to pass the GED tests, enhance basic education skills, and earn their high school diploma.

Responsible for teaching the HSE, and or ELA test areas (literature, writing, social studies, science, and math) or adult basic education skills areas (writing, math, language)

Plan and prepares relevant and practical class lessons and monitors student’s performance.

Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, which include group or individualized instruction as well as computer programs that help students make learning level gains.

Complete and assist in the maintenance and reporting of State-mandated documentation

Responsible for effective classroom management that enhances student learning

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Thorough understanding of adult learner and alternative educational methods and have the ability to apply these methods for adult, at-risk teens, and multi-cultural students

Ability to teach students of diverse abilities and backgrounds and overcome barriers to success in a multi-level class

Ability to build a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.

Must be computer literate and able to use varying types of audio-visual equipment

Participate in curriculum development

Attend in-service, staff meetings, department and divisional meetings and state training

Possess excellent oral, written, communication and organizational skills.

Enthusiasm for the subject material that will foster a love of learning by students.

Minimum Educational Qualifications :

Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education or related field and three years of teaching experience

Preferred Educational Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Adult Education or related field and five years of teaching experience
