Bucknell University is seeking to fill the position of Software Developer or Software Engineer depending on the applicants qualifications. The selected candidate will join a team of technology professionals who leverage their software development skills and knowledge to solve real world business problems for students, faculty, and staff across Bucknell University. These solutions can range in scope and complexity from custom built software system to integration and configuration of third-party products. The team utilizes a wide array of industry-leading technologies, platforms, and development techniques to meet the diverse needs of the University's many functional user groups in accordance with the Bucknell University Strategic Plan.

The Software Developer:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College degree in a relevant technical field and at least one (1) year of practical experience developing code OR at least five (5) years of relevant practical experience developing code

  • Fundamental knowledge of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms.

  • Troubleshoot existing code and perform enhancements/break fixes

  • Ability to collaborate with other technical departments to ensure efficient, reliable support, monitoring and maintenance of developed solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing server-side solutions with one or more of the following development languages; .Net, Java, Kotlin

  • Experience with agile development approaches including Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment

  • Experience with version control systems such as GitHub or GitLab

  • Experience with cloud technologies including serverless computing

  • Experience with container technologies

  • Experience with REST- and SOAP-based web services

  • Experience with Linux and command line tools

  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL database environments


The Software Engineer:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field and five years of experience OR Master's degree in computer science or a related technical field and three years of experience.

  • Advanced knowledge of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms.

  • Experience developing server-side solutions with one or more of the following development languages; .Net, Java, Kotlin

  • Experience with REST- and SOAP-based web services

  • Demonstrated experience in collaborating with other departments to gather requirements by understanding and translating their needs

  • Experience in architecting solutions for complex projects, designing database architecture to support new applications and managing large scale projects by ensuring execution of all steps of SDLC.

  • Experience with version control systems such as GitHub or GitLab

  • Demonstrated previous experience in performing code reviews of junior software developers and ability to quickly adapt new tools and technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing server-side solution with one or more of the following development languages; .Net, Java, Kotlin

  • Experience with client-side MVC frameworks like Angular, React, Vue, or similar.

  • Experience with AWS technologies including Lambda, SNS, SQS, S3, CloudFormation

  • Experience with container technologies such as Docker, ECS, or Kubernetes

  • Experience development and consumption of both REST and SOAP based Web Services

  • Strong comfort levels with Linux and command line tools

  • Experience with Relational or NoSQL database environments such as Oracle, MS SQL Server or MongoDB

  • Prior experience with Workday, Ellucian Banner or any other ERP system is preferred.

Work Type:

This position is a 12-month, exempt, benefits eligible position.

This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.

Salary Range:

This is staff exempt position with a hiring range of $60,000 - $72,500, Software Developer; $77,900 - $97,375, Software Engineer. The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
