Located in Boston's historic Fenway area, Simmons has a strong tradition of empowering women and of challenging traditional gender roles. Simmons University was one of the first higher education institutions to focus on preparing women to become leaders and has evolved to become a university offering a women-centered undergraduate program, with graduate programs open to all. Nursing education at Simmons dates back to 1933. At that time, Simmons implemented a five- year baccalaureate program in nursing and became a charter member of the National League for Nursing. Simmons continues its proud tradition of educating nurses. Today, Simmons School of Nursing offers a traditional 4 year BSN program, a 16-month accelerated BSN program for students with a prior baccalaureate degree, a 2-year Dix scholars program for adult learners, an online RN to BSN program, and a 4 + 1 BSN-MSN FNP program, while graduate nursing programs offer paths for a direct-entry MSN, Post Licensure MSN FNP, MSN PMHNP, and doctoral education.

The Dotson Bridge and Mentoring Program (DBMP) was created 13 years ago as a result of a study that found that ALANA (African American, Latina, Asian, and Native American) students were not as successful in the nursing program as their Caucasian counterparts. The DBMP offers various support services to its scholars such as content tutoring, test taking skills, organizational and study skills to insure their success. The DBMP also has a mentoring component that provides one-on-one mentoring from professional nurses to the scholars. The School of Nursing at Simmons University is seeking applicants for a full-time 12-month contract faculty position for the DBMP. Job Summary: The full-time Assistant Director in the DBMP reports to the Director of the DBMP. The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting with supervision of the program mentors as directed by the DBMP Director and will be responsible for a mentoring caseload. The Assistant Director will also collaborate with the Director on programming for the DBMP including service projects, leadership seminars, orientation for new scholars, workshop presentations and other tasks as assigned by the Director.

Faculty Responsibilities
  • Assisting with supervising approximately 12 - 15 Mentors
  • Mentoring approximately 15 Scholars per semester
  • Arranging and leading monthly First-year Support Groups
  • Arranging content-specific tutoring sessions and study groups
  • Collaborate with nursing faculty to address the needs of the Dotson Scholars and other nursing students
  • Demonstrating commitment to continuous improvement through an annual review of activities and accomplishments related to excellence in teaching, professional engagement to maintain currency, service and contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives
  • Providing support, through office hours and other means, to ensure every student is involved in a positive educational experience through learning, teaching, and intellectual engagement
  • Eliciting, supporting, and implementing curricula to ensure course and program objectives are achieved
  • Teaching responsibilities include one course section per academic year and as assigned based on need in the undergraduate and/or graduate programs.


Service Responsibilities

The faculty member is expected to provide service to the University and contribute to the University's pursuit of its mission. These responsibilities include:
  • Advising students at the undergraduate level
  • Participating as a team member in curriculum development and maintenance
  • Participating in program, department, college and university meetings, committees, and activities
  • Participating and assisting in faculty governance


Professional Engagement Responsibilities

All contract faculty are expected to maintain currency in their discipline and licensure as required to carry out their duties at the University, including:
  • Participating in professional development to remain relevant in discipline
  • Maintaining certifications, if applicable, to continue currency in the field
  • Maintaining involvement in the broader academic and professional community in accordance with disciplinary/professional standards


Administrative Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Director to facilitate the Mentor Meetings in conjunction with the administrative assistant
  • Collaborate with the Director to facilitate outreach to our clinical stakeholders to introduce Scholars to opportunities in their facilities
  • Collaborate with the Director to build and manage the budget
  • Assist the Director with complex student issues
  • Maintain active, responsive, and positive communication with Nursing faculty, staff, Chair, Directors, and other university members
  • Actively participate in the maintenance of a culture of quality, trust, and accountability


Qualifications/Skills
  • Graduate degree in Nursing
  • Active unencumbered MA RN license
  • 3-5 years of experience as a Nursing faculty
  • Creative problem solver
  • Strong and effective communicator with faculty and students
  • Program evaluation experience preferred


Terms of Service

The Assistant Director position is a Boston-based 12-month faculty role with administrative responsibilities.
