As we continue to evolve as a center, mirroring the change we see every day here on the shores of Casco Bay, we aspire to ensure that the Schiller Coastal Studies Center ( SCSC ):
  • Provides all Bowdoin students with a meaningful SCSC experience before they graduate

The Associate Director for Science ( ADS ) will support all aspects of the SCSC’s natural science research activities and will report to the Director of the SCSC . The ADS, in consultation with the Director, will be primary point of contact for all natural science research activities at the Center, including field work, to ensure that SCSC research reflects and advances the SCSC mission. The responsibilities of the ADS include:
  • Ensuring that all research spaces, including the SCSC Sea Lab and Dry Lab, are maintained to the highest safety standards and are supplied with the materials, equipment and systems needed to support Bowdoin student, faculty and visiting scientists.
  • Logistics related to the research enterprise at the Center and will be supported by the Research and Instrument Support Technician.
  • Working with the Director to develop both disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches and initiatives for researching coastal concerns.
  • Using advanced communication and project management skills to develop and implement research collaborations across stakeholder groups (e.g. – researchers, business leaders, students, community members, governmental agencies and legislators).
  • Serving as a Lab Instructor in the Bowdoin Coastal Studies semester in the first or subsequent years.
  • Having the opportunity to conduct their own research based on previous experience, qualifications and interest. If the ADS holds a doctoral degree, they may also have the opportunity to supervise student research.
Salary Range for this position is expected to be: Minimum $80,000- Maximum $90,000

Education/Skills Requirements

  • M.S or more in Biology, Oceanographic Science, Environmental Science, Biochemistry or related field.
  • Strong interest in innovative, accessible higher education.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent initiative and organizational skills with the ability to work both autonomously and in a team.
  • Great time management skills.
  • Personal commitment to the environmental focus and mission of the college.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience supporting both student and faculty research in an academic setting.
  • Demonstrated advanced communication and project management skills with multiple stakeholder groups.
Standard Work Days and Hours
  • Monday – Friday 8:30am – 5:00pm.
  • Occasional night or weekend hours as needed.
  • This is a salaried position requiring the time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements.
