The Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering (www.me.gatech.edu) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA seeks experienced applicants for the position of Director of Student Services.  The Director of Student Services is a non- tenure-track faculty position ideal for a seasoned leader/manager with strong people skills and successful experience in running complex organizations with a proven track record of establishing positive organizational climates. Applicants will be considered at all ranks.

Specific responsibilities of the Director of Student Services include:

Lead/Supervise/Manage a staff of eleven individuals in the Woodruff School Office of Student Services in providing first-class support to students and staff & faculty in all areas of academic services.   

Academically advises and provides career guidance to both undergraduate students, in the mechanical engineering and nuclear and radiological engineering programs, and graduate students, in the mechanical engineering, nuclear and radiological engineering, medical physics, bioengineering, and robotics programs. 

Serves as the faculty advisor for all BSMS, MS non-thesis, distance learning MS, and MS students at GTL.

Manages the Woodruff School distance learning MSME program.  Interfaces with GTPE, and various constituents of the distance learning program, including General Electric, ABB, and the Naval Nuclear Laboratory.

Administratively active in a leadership role in the Woodruff School.  Assists the School Chair and Associate Chairs in the governance of the School and issues that affect the entire Georgia Institute of Technology community. 

Works closely with the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in recruiting and admitting graduate students.  Reviews and processes over 1300 graduate student applications per year through the Slate system.

Works closely with the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in resolving faculty advisor – graduate student interaction problems.  Resolves student issues.  Works with the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies, the ME graduate advising team, the Registrar, and the Associate Vice Provost for Advocacy and Conflict Resolution to resolve student complaints and difficulties.

Augments the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in management of the undergraduate program and ongoing ABET accreditation. 

Assists the Associate Chair for Administration with registration issues and implementation of the teaching schedule. 

Teaches engineering courses in the Woodruff School.

Maintains and utilization of the Woodruff School Graduate Database.  Management of the large graduate student population in the Woodruff School (over 800 students) requires automated processes.  This system effectively manages:
(1) graduate student recruiting and admission

(2) academic form processing for items such as programs of study, seminar and teaching practicum management, PhD qualifying exam recordkeeping, MS Thesis and PhD Dissertation tracking, as well as myriad other academic service responsibilities. 

Financial administration of assistantships and fellowships through use of the GradWorks system and direct interface with personnel in the Finance Office.

Assignment and implementation of Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs)

Manages, oversees the selection process, and coordinates payments for all Graduate Fellowships in GWW.

Involved in Student Learning Outcome Assessments at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for accreditation bodies such as SACS, ABET, and Periodic Academic Reviews. Implement and manage the web assessment system for doing course-level assessment of student outcome achievement CLASS (Course Level Assessment System) developed by Whiteman.  It is a web-based tool that can also be used to supplement the Institute’s Assessment system.

Implement the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Teaching Fellows Program starting in the fall of 2012.  This program has the benefit of not only helping faculty colleagues with superb teaching skills, professional growth and development.  The objectives of the program are to help faculty foster engaged learning in the classroom.  The desire is to develop a culture of teaching and learning excellence among faculty. 

Serves as an ex-officio member of the following committees:

  • Faculty Advisory Committee
  • Graduate Committee
  • Undergraduate Committee
  • Graduate Student Development Committee

Attends and sometimes makes presentations to the Woodruff School External Advisory Board.

Meets with all/many Woodruff School faculty candidates.

Serves on COE and Institute committees for various reasons; search committees, promotion and tenure of Academic Professionals.
