Director of Philanthropy (DoP) for the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, is a proven and forward-looking fundraising professional who understands how to generate philanthropic support for CSUSB from various stakeholders - individuals and organizations and who will work collaboratively with university representatives including the academic leadership within the college.

The DoP will work in a highly collaborative environment working directly with the Dean of the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences and the leadership team for the University Advancement division. The principal activity of the DoP is to be externally focused, with responsibility for engaging a portfolio of individuals, corporations, and foundations that have a potential affinity with the University and student success. The DoP's effectiveness will be evaluated on the ability to achieve financial goals and contact metrics consistent with the programs and prospects assigned. The DoP reports to the Associate Vice President of Philanthropic Giving. This position will focus on major gift fundraising in support of the student affairs division.

Major duties and responsibilities:
  • Plan, manage, and direct a comprehensive development program for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences that includes prospect management, major gift cultivation, and solicitation.
  • Work closely with the AVP and the Dean as well as advancement colleagues to envision college and campus-wide development goals, initiatives, events, campaigns, and protocols.
  • Conceptualize a successful development program and quantified plan that identifies the resources needs of the CSBS.
  • Implement, plan, and manage activities designed to meet the approved development goals.
  • Coordinate college fund-raising efforts within the context of the institution's development program, including alumni, parents, and past student leaders, through major gift and annual fund campaigns.
  • Provide active leadership in the identification, solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship of major donors and donor prospects, including individuals, business entities, corporations, and foundations for the support of CSBS's programs.
  • Formulate and execute short-term and long-term strategic plans to include specific and measurable targets regarding definite fund-raising goals, prospect management, personal contacts, stewardship activities, and solicitations.
  • Provide active leadership in the identification, solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship of major donors and donor prospects, including individuals, business entities, corporations, and foundations for the support of CSBS's programs.
  • Work with the CSBS faculty, staff, and departments to educate and support management with respect to their development roles, and identify potential areas of interest for funding priorities, collaboration, and research initiatives.
  • Work closely with department chairs and program directors on their particular needs. Ensure best practices in donor stewardship activities within the college.
  • This includes appropriate individual and organizational donor recognition and stewardship as well as the coordination and oversight of all scholarship endowments and awards.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Strategic Communications to market the college and its programs through publications, fund-raising events, stewardship, and donor recognition activities to both on-campus and off-campus constituents to improve awareness and expand philanthropic support.
  • Assist with general donor cultivation, asks, and stewardship as part of the University development team that attracts additional campus support important to all colleges, schools, and programs.
  • Participate in divisional strategic planning, goal setting, event planning, and project status sessions and will maintain the highest standards of campus development procedures and protocols utilizing various forms, report formats, databases, and clearance procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in fundraising for higher education or other non-profits.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university. Experience managing and cultivating relationships.

Required Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge of planned/deferred giving vehicles such as wills, life income plans, gifts of unusual assets, beneficiary designations.
  • Proven customer service and relationship building experience.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, BSR Advance database (or equivalents) and Crescendo gift planning software (or equivalents).
  • Successful experience in working with people from diverse backgrounds.


Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,916 - $9,166 per month
Classification Salary Range: $4,583 - $14,713 per month

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Exempt/At-Will

Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position will remain open until filled. Applications will be reviewed beginning March 31, 2023.
