Position Summary

The Systems Administrator will be responsible for the administration of various servers, both physical and virtual in an enterprise environment. The individual will be part of a successful, forward-thinking, enterprise technology team, supporting the Administrative, Instructional and Academic missions of a Higher Education Institution. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with the senior systems administrators in administrating, maintaining, upgrading and operating various technologies across campus. Daily responsibilities will include, operating system updates, developing monitoring and response strategies, conducting routine security audits, assisting with the installation of new technology, hardware maintenance, project management, user administration and working closely with a team of technologists to maintain state of the art efficient, reliable, and secure IT infrastructure.

Major Responsibilities
  • Maintain current levels of operating systems on all enterprise level servers
  • Perform proper Windows, Unix, and Linux operating system administration. Assist in administering Office 365
  • Perform daily activities to assure proper campus wide Anti-Virus protection
  • Continuously monitor infrastructure usage trends and make strategic response strategy recommendations
  • Perform daily maintenance and troubleshooting of our enterprise servers: upgrading, patching, basic scripting, general troubleshooting, running backups and restores
  • Perform day to day administration of university file shares: granting permissions, assuring proper security levels
  • Schedule and monitor system backups and perform data recovery as needed
  • Ensure that all workstations and servers comply with established policies, standards, licensing agreements, and configuration guidelines.
  • Participate in establishing and implementing policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure system security.
  • Assist with the deployment of VMware (virtualization software) in an enterprise blade server environment
  • Install, configure, and optimize core servers and software
  • Administer other Enterprise application as assigned in accordance with campus licensing and security requirements.
  • Administer Cortland’s storage area networks
  • Attend Training as required
  • Conduct off hours maintenance as required
Functional and Supervisory Relationships

Reports to Assistant Director, Systems Operations and Security

Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree; two or more years’ relevant experience; In lieu of degree, four years of full time directly related experience, or a combination of higher education and experience totaling four years may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years server administration experience
  • Experience Administering Windows servers
  • Experience working with Active Directory
  • Experience with VmWare ESX servers
  • Experience Administering Storage Area Networks
  • Project Management Experience
  • Experience with setup and maintenance of server hardware
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with internal and external groups
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experiencing Administering Office 365
  • Experience Administering various webservers, IIS, Apache, Tomcat
  • Experience with Windows Update Server
  • •Experience with Antivirus/Malware software
  • Experience with Backup systems
  • Experience in Higher Education environments strongly preferred.
