The Department of English, Modern Languages, & Journalism is seeking to appoint a full-time, non-tenure-track, incentives-based, annually-renewable position as Languages Program & Outreach Coordinator.

The position requires sustained community outreach endeavors and coordinated teaching assignments with the Emporia Spanish Speakers non-profit organization and its program for professionals Se Habla Español.

Under the limited supervision of the department chair, the successful candidate will serve as the academic unit’s coordinator of the languages program, supporting colleagues with the instruction for students with limited literacy skills, and will assist in developing, coordinating, implementing and assessing in-person, online & hybrid curricula.

The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to develop and lead study abroad programs and teach additional courses in the summer. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher and a dynamic colleague capable of both teamwork and working independently. A commitment to recruitment initiatives, community engagement and high impact activities is expected. Based in Emporia, Kansas.

 

Teaching Duties

  • Teach (4) introductory Spanish 1, 2 or 3 level hybrid courses paired with a fully online section Run a dynamic "classroom" that utilizes community spaces as real-life communicative scenarios
  • Organize and conduct conversation groups Maintain weekly office hours

 

Outreach Duties

  • Coordinate with ESU’s Intensive English Program Develop courses and events for outreach to the Emporia community for both Spanish and English language learners Develop and maintain a hyper-focused program content for the non-profit community partner, aimed to teach functional Spanish for professional interactions 

 

Administrative Duties

  • Coordinate language placement testing and level-appropriate student course enrollment each semester in cooperation with the professional advisors. Coordinate with IT to complete the team teaching assignments and CANVAS course roll-out for introductory Spanish courses. Curate instructional materials and coordinate with curriculum review processes in both IEP and language program classes. Function as the point-of-contact with Vista Higher Learning representative for online training and troubleshooting tech issues for integration of Vista products in CANVAS Perform other duties, as needed.

 

Key skills & abilities

  • Ability to assist with the production of culturally appropriate educational events, programs, and projects from inception to execution. Ability to plan, organize and carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and handle multiple projects and work priorities. Ability to provide mentorship and coach students in their personal and professional development. Evidence of effective engagement with a diverse student body. Experience in or commitment to use culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students.

 

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Terminal degree with specialization in language and/or linguistics, TESOL, Foreign Language Teaching Pedagogies, or a related field (ABD will be considered) Demonstrated academic training and teaching experience in the required areas Candidates must be student-focused, goal-oriented, and collaborative with colleagues in the department and the university Bilingual Spanish/English

 

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics, or a closely related field, on or by August 1, 2023 (Applicants who are ABD for the terminal degree will be considered if their degree will be conferred by August 1, 2024) Experience teaching heritage learners of Spanish A K-12 Teaching Certification and Teaching experience with adult learners
