Job Description

The Payroll Analyst II will review, analyze and adjust payroll data, exercising independent judgment/discretion within the University’s established policies and payroll procedures; balance weekly and semi payrolls, process withholding tax payments as required by federal and various state regulations; and ensure that Syracuse University is in compliance with IRS and state regulations.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent 1 – 3 years of payroll experience, experience in higher education is highly beneficial.

Job Specific Qualifications

1+ years of Payroll experience, experience in higher education preferable; proficient with Excel, query tools, oral and written communication skills, and well-developed analytical and computer skills

Responsibilities

Weekly and semimonthly payroll processing, including but not limited to: reviewing requests for additional pay, running processes to load data into payroll, processing payroll calculations, running data analysis queries, reviewing/correcting pay issues, contacting departments and/or HR to address concerns. After payroll confirmation, creation of files and reports, printing checks, preparing wage garnishment and tax levy payments.

Provide direct expert-level service to all employees and department administrators.

Post and balance weekly and semi payrolls; Prepare tax deposits after each weekly/semi payroll in accordance with Federal and State regulations; Reconcile payroll receivable and liability chartstrings monthly. Review employees working remotely outside of NY State, provide tax withholding forms and handle setup of appropriate state taxes.

Research various types of payments made to employees or made on behalf of employees, in order to analyze and record taxable and non-taxable income/benefits where applicable.

Handle various projects as assigned by the Associate Director of Payroll or Associate Comptroller such as calculation of inputted income, preparation, execution, and filing for abandoned property (uncashed payroll checks), verification of employee social security numbers/names.
