What we are seeking:

A nationally recognized Pediatric Intensivist with a track record of leadership and of building clinical programs. There is an expectation that the new leader will grow the current clinical programs and develop a strategy to support specialty programs.  The Division Head will oversee a strong teaching program that supports growth of future physician leaders, the Division currently offers opportunity to participate in medical students, residents and fellowship teaching.  The Division currently has two pediatric critical care fellows per year.  The leader will promote the growth of clinical and translational research with emphasis on institution wide collaboration. It is expected that the new Division Head will enhance clinical operations with the goal to grow and expand current clinical offerings.  The Division Head must exhibit the qualities required to be a successful leader in a complex organization, including working collaboratively across various organizations and effectively promoting the Division with community providers, leaders, donors, and hospital executives.

About University of Illinois College of Medicine, Peoria (UICOMP) Department of Pediatrics and OSF Healthcare Children’s Hospital of Illinois:

UICOMP is one of the three regional campuses of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, one of the largest public medical schools in the country. UICOMP’s educational programs include 244 medical students and 300 residents/fellows in 21 different post graduate programs.  The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments at UICOMP.  In collaboration with the OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois, the Department has 19 divisions and over 145 faculty members providing general pediatrics and subspecialty services to the pediatric population in Central Illinois.

Jump Simulation is a collaboration between the UICOMP and OSF HealthCare.  The center replicates a variety of patient care settings to ensure novice and seasoned clinicians can practice handling medical situations in a life-like environment.  Jump Advanced Imaging and Modeling, created in 2013, is a collaborative effort between engineers and medical professionals to perfect the vision of human anatomy and pathology through 3D/4D modeling and imaging.  The National Institutes of Health 3D Print Exchange Heart Library, curated by the Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center, was developed to grow the understanding of congenital heart disease through the open sharing of hearts and ideas.  There are ongoing collaboration with Jump Innovation and the Department in simulation, advanced imaging, artificial intelligence and machine learning application in healthcare research.

The current research infrastructure within the Department includes office of research, a dedicated biostatistician and internal research funding mechanism to support our faculty.  The primary teaching hospital of UICOMP is Children’s Hospital of Illinois, a tertiary care facility serving a 37-county region with a population base of over two million. Children’s Hospital of Illinois provides comprehensive services to children, including Level IV NICU and a state-designated Pediatric Critical Care Center. Children’s Hospital of Illinois is a major medical facility with 124 beds and a 32-bed critical care unit and the only Level 1 trauma center in Illinois outside of Chicago. There are existing resources through UICOMP and Children’s Hospital of Illinois for seeding research funding, quality and outcomes focused academic work and innovation in health education. 

About Pediatric Critical Care Division:

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care consists of 11 physicians, 8 Advanced Practice Providers. Pediatric, Internal Medicine-Pediatric, Emergency Medicine residents, and medical students rotate through the service. The Division has a Pediatric critical care, and an APP critical care fellowship programs. The Division’s staff provides care at the OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital. The Critical Care Program consists of 16 critical care beds, and an open intermediate care 16 beds. 

The members of the Division have subspecialty expertise in cardiac critical care, Respiratory care, and neuro critical care.

• Cardiac Critical Care is directed by a dually boarded critical care and cardiology physicians.  Provides support for the congenital heart surgical program, an active diagnostic/Interventional Cardiology program, and patients with other cardiac conditions. Provides support for the certified ECMO program. Provides support to pediatric surgical subspecialties (general, neurosurgical, ENT, orthopedic surgeries), and medical subspecialties. The Division provides procedural sedation services in collaboration with the sedation program. The Division also provides CRRT and hemodialysis services in collaboration with pediatric nephrology. The Critical care service cares for about 1900 patients per year, more than one third are from regional transports.  The system has an active air transport and a pediatric critical care ground transport is about to commence.

Education is an essential mission of the Division providing clinical bedside education to students, residents and fellows.  Currently there are two critical care fellows per year and we anticipate there will be 6 fellows in the Division going forward.  The Division hosts an annual education program in Pediatric Critical Care medicine for community emergency providers and other providers.  PFCCS course and special simulation skills sessions are being offered as well.

The Division is actively engaged in quality improvement and process improvement research.  One of the faculty is currently doing basic science research.  Last year the Division published 22 peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Position Summary
Providing care for critically ill patients hospitalized in the critical care and intermediate care unit. Provide consultation and support to other services with regard to assessment and stabilization of critically ill children in other areas of the hospital.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead the Division faculty and advanced practice providers in:

• Providing care for critically ill patients hospitalized in the critical care and intermediate care unit. Provide consultation and support to other services with regard to assessment and stabilization of critically ill children in other areas of the hospital. Provide consultation services for physicians and patients in the region requiring critical care services, and oversee the performance of a budding ground transport program. Collaborating with nursing leadership, unit’s pharmacists, respiratory therapist, and other ancillary services to provide high quality, safe, and individualized patient and family centered care. To sustain an existing supportive and collaborative environment for other subspecialists thus facilitating programs that care for high complexity patients. To support quality improvement efforts and safety initiatives within the critical care unit. To support undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs of the Department. Work closely with the Pediatric Critical Care fellowship Program Director to support and strengthen the critical care fellowship program, and oversee the faculty’s contribution to nursing, APPs., and transport team education. Direct and conduct his/her own research activities in pediatric critical care medicine. Perform duties of a University faculty member including committee assignments, curriculum development and administration.

Minimum Qualifications

• MD/DO degree. Completed both Pediatric residency and Pediatric Critical Care fellowship training. Minimum of 6 years of Pediatric Critical Care experience. Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care. Eligible for licensure in Illinois.
