Associate Vice President, International Affairs



Roles

Northwood University seeks an Associate Vice President, International Affairs (AVPIA) to provide leadership and oversight for the development and execution for all aspects of international affairs at Northwood University.

The AVPIA will be responsible to execute four priorities as they relate to Northwood’s efforts to internationalize the University. These include management and growth of Northwood’s International Program Centers (IPCs), increase enrollment of international students studying at Northwood’s flagship campus in Midland, MI, guide internationalization efforts across all university operations, and support the academic area’s advancement of academic programming, research, and industry partnerships as they relate to international topics and scholarly interests.

Reporting to a member of the executive committee, and working closely with the university’s enrollment team, the AVPIA will renew Northwood’s strategy to increase the number of on-campus international students. As a member of the University’s Leadership Council, the AVPIA will work closely with faculty, staff, and students to deepen and extend Northwood’s partnerships abroad, with particular focus on countries where Northwood has established IPCs. The AVPIA will work closely with Northwood’s academic areas to promote, support, and ensure academic quality and integrity as it relates to course offerings, degree programs, faculty, student, and associated support services delivered within the international arena.

Responsibilities
  • serve as Northwood’s thought leader related to international affairs
  • lead efforts to materially increase the number of international students enrolled at the Midland campus
  • provide overall quality and financial oversight to all IPCs
  • qualify and establish 5 new IPCs before 2026
  • qualify and establish international partnerships to advance Northwood’s mission
  • work closely with all Northwood departments to advance efforts to internationalize Northwood University, including the development of programming to ensure transformational study, internship opportunities, and service-learning experiences abroad
Qualifications
  • An earned master’s degree from an accredited higher education institution; terminal degree is highly desirable
  • At least 7-10 years’ demonstrable experience in leading a successful international area in an institution of higher education, other non-profit, or related business sector
  • Proven strategy for increasing international enrollment at higher educational institutions
  • Experience working with the international arena and with overseas institutions
  • Fluency in a second language is desired
  • Working knowledge of fundraising in not-for-profit higher educational institutions or the business sector
  • Demonstrated experience in managing budgets
  • Exceptional people management skills

  • establish and maintain professional networks with relevant domestic and international organizations
  • establish budget and meet financial targets
  • effectively lead and support all personnel in the International Department
  • ensure all relevant policies and procedures are current and understood by all employees within the department
  • perform other duties as may be delegated or assigned.
