Southwestern Illinois College is accepting applications for a full-time, grant-funded position of Instructor in the Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic program within the Health Sciences & Homeland Security division. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2023.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  In accordance with the Mission and Values of Southwestern Illinois College, the successful applicant will serve as instructor in the Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic program. As an instructor, the individual will teach emergency medicine and/or paramedic courses in both the traditional and computerized environment and will assist the program coordinator with program operations, accreditation standards as applicable, and the clinical education component of the program.  As faculty, the individual will be responsible for the continued development, implementation, and overall effectiveness of the educational courses/curriculum with the Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic faculty and evaluation of student performance. The individual will collaborate with Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic faculty to evaluation the effectiveness of instruction in each of the programs. Opportunities exist for participation in professional development activities and service on departmental, divisional, and/or college-wide committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Paramedic certification; Illinois EMS Lead Instructor license; American Heart Association CPR instructor required.
  2. Minimum of five (5) years emergency service experience; or in lieu of emergency service experience, higher levels of EMS related certificate with three (3) years’ experience at that higher level.
  3. Shall have completed an Associate or advanced degree in a professionally related area, or obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  4. Qualified through education and/or experience to assure proficiency in, but not limited to, the following areas:
  • Supervision
  • Curriculum design      
  • Instructional methodology
  • Testing and evaluation
  • Educational psychology
  • Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, and advising skills.
  • Must meet and continue to maintain the professional standards established by the program’s accrediting agencies including the Illinois Department of Public Health, National EMS Education Standards, and current American Heart Association guidelines.
  • Competency with applicable software systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Blackboard, etc.) preferred.
  • Ability to meet, successfully complete and maintain minimum health requirements, drug and/or reference checks required by college and/or clinical facilities prior to and throughout employment.
  • Shall meet the minimum standards of instruction established by the Administration and the Board of Trustees for any assigned courses.
  • A valid driver’s license required.

STARTING SALARY:  This is a nine-month teaching position with the salary determined by placement on the base salary schedule.  For example, the minimum 2022-2023 starting salary at Step 1 below the Master’s Degree column is $48,491.  Voluntary overload teaching assignments and mandatory summer program coordination may increase the annual compensation by 30-40%.  The College offers a comprehensive flexible benefit program.

 

WORK LOCATION:  Emergency Medicine/Paramedic instructional primary responsibilities will be at the East St Louis campus with district-wide instructional and/or clinical responsibilities. Driving may be required to reach off-campus sites, visit clinical facilities throughout the region and to attend professional functions within the state of Illinois and the St. Louis region.
