Job Summary

Under the general supervision of Program Coordinator of Peer Learning and Program Coordinator of Advising, the incumbent will be responsible for the management, development, direction of CNSM learning community (LC) program for first time first year students. The incumbent will collaborate with Peer Learning Coordinator on hiring, training, and supervising of peer mentors assigned to CNSM learning communities. The incumbent will be working collaboratively with faculty liaisons, CNSM Scheduling Coordinator, Coordinator of Advising, and the Associate Dean in supporting all aspects of CNSM learning communities including recruitment of members, daily logistical support, student development programming, and assessment of the LC effectiveness. In incumbent will collaborate with CNSM faculty, staff, and campus partners in supporting outreach events, student research symposium, community building events, and academic skill building workshops. The incumbent will provide comprehensive academic advising to CNSM general undergraduate population (up to 25% caseload) using interviewing and counseling techniques, in one-to-one appointments, “quick questions,” and in workshop settings. Advise students on where to get assistance; help set up support groups. The incumbent is expected to play a critical role in CNSM efforts to improve retention and inclusive student success and will promote the principles of “growth mindset” and metacognitive learning strategies.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provides overall coordination and planning for CNSM learning communities (LC) programs including direct supervision and coordination of LC peer mentors in collaboration with faculty liaisons and Peer Learning Coordinator conducts recruitment, selection, and hiring, and training of peer mentors. Provides direct training and support for peer mentors participating in Freshmen Scholars Learning Communities. Implements strategies to maintain and improve student programs and services in the SAS Center by exercising professional skills, knowledge, judgment, persuasion, and imagination required in working with policies, students, administration, faculty, staff, and other campus community groups.
  • Under general supervision of Coordinator of Advising provides comprehensive academic advising to CNSM general undergraduate population using interviewing and counseling techniques, in one-to-one appointments, “quick questions,” and in workshop settings collects, compiles, analyzes, and evaluates student data, reports, and/or documents for the CNSM Advising Center.
  • Alongside the Coordinator of Advising, represents CNSM on various college- and university-level committees.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to use professional judgment and sensitivity in confidential personnel matters. Ability to interpret and apply human resources regulations and policies. Ability to use professional judgment and sensitivity in confidential student matters. Ability to interpret and apply university regulations and policies to student situations. Familiarity with science, technology, engineering and mathematics majors or careers preferred. Ability to strategically plan and manage all aspects of a student service program, from recruitment to programming to evaluation. Knowledge of and ability to utilize counseling and student development theory and techniques in individual and group advisement settings. Knowledge of technological applications for use in higher education. Proficiency in applications for word processing, databases, spreadsheets, email and internet software. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Blackboard, PeopleSoft database, and web management software preferred. Knowledge and understanding of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Ability to collaborate across campus units and build effective connections. Machines used in performance of duties include office equipment such as copier, fax, scanner, phone, computer, and data projector.

Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience

Required: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas.

Preferred: Master's degree in counseling, Higher Education Student Services, Teaching or similar field. Experience in higher education, preferably in academic support. Demonstrated understanding of best practices in designing and executing peer-learning programs. Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of campus constituencies.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: $4,610- $5,334 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,610 - $6,556 per month

Time Base

Full-time temporary position for two (2) years with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
