Assistant Teaching Professor, African Studies

The African Studies Program at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor position, to start Fall 2023. This is a non-tenure-track, term position for one year with an excellent possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities include primarily teaching introductory, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate courses in African Studies. The possibility of teaching a graduate course is contingent on the approval of the candidate's scholarship by the Graduate School. The ideal candidate will be able to teach a range of courses, including sociology, economics, and politics of Africa. A successful candidate must have a record of being able to teach both in person and online.

A Ph.D. and relevant research and experience in the areas of sociology, economics, and politics of Africa and African studies are required by the effective date of hire. Candidates will be evaluated according to the following criteria: promise and experience as a teacher and a commitment to working with a diverse student body. In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.

To be considered for this position, applicants must include a cover letter that details relevant qualifications and a current CV (with the names and contact information of three references).

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For more information about the program, please visit our website at https://africanstudies.la.psu.edu/.
