The VCOM-Virginia Campus Dean oversees the academic operations for the Virginia Campus of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, manages the financial resources related to academic operations on the Virginia Campus, and assures implementation and assessment of the VCOM Long Range Plan (LRP) on the Virginia Campus.
The Campus Dean oversees the undergraduate medical education operations on the Virginia Campus and in the affiliated clinical sites. The oversight includes both faculty and staff performance on the campus, assurance of excellent recruitment, retention, and academic outcomes. The Campus Dean assures the success of the academic teaching programs on the VCOM-Virginia Campus. The Campus Dean also works closely with the Vice Provost for Research to the success of the research programs on their campus. The Dean represents the College to the local community, the Virginia Tech community, and to healthcare entities within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Oversees VCOM – Virginia Campus academic programs for the OMS 1-4 curriculum assuring the following:
- a successful recruitment of faculty and staff on the Virginia Campus appropriate to deliver the curriculum, assuring the quality for all final hires for that campus.
- the recruitment and retention of faculty/staff appropriate in size and quality to deliver the academic program on the Virginia Campus.
- Provides budget development (with input from Associate Dean) and has budgetary authority and oversight of the development, maintenance, and assurances for the academic budget on the VCOM Virginia Campus.
- Oversees and assures all academic operations on the Virginia Campus.
- Provides leadership and directs VCOM Virginia Campus’ six Associate Deans including the Associate Deans for: 1) Medical Education, 2) Biomedical & Campus Research, 3) Clinical Affairs, 4) OMS 4 students and Graduate Medical Education, 5) Simulation and Educational Technology, and 6) Student Affairs, assuring the quality and delivery of their programs.
- Oversees the implementation of VCOM policies and procedures as they relate to academic operations (College Catalog, Student Handbook, Faculty Handbook, and Staff Handbook).
- Meets with the President and Provost and provides a monthly report on the Campus including but not limited to student performance in the academic program, student retention, faculty and staff performance, academic and social programs being held for students and faculty, and any issues causing concerns to the Provost and President.
- Develops bi-annual formal reports based on outcomes and activities to the Provost and President to be presented to the Board of Directors and the Virginia Campus Advisory Board.
- Serves as an oversight member of the Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee.
- Assures all VCOM - Virginia Campus academic programs including assuring:
- all committees are appointed and meet on a regular basis and that appropriate records are maintained (electronically and hardcopy).
- the faculty development programs are delivered on the Virginia Campus and faculty attend those appropriate to assure academic growth.
- the implementation, delivery, and periodic review of the college-wide curriculum on the Virginia Campus and appropriate measures are taken to assure excellent outcomes.
- Oversees VCOM’s Long Range Plan (LRP) as it is applied to the Virginia Campus.
- Works with the Vice Provost for the Academic Affairs to:
- tracks academic outcomes on the Virginia Campus
- assures all student academic and mental health services are provided
- assures all faculty development is provided where/when needed
- assures the VCOM Virginia Campus meets the mission of the College and all Academic performance measures are met.
- Works with the CFO and the President/Provost annually to assure an appropriate budget development and quarterly to assure the Virginia Campus compliance.
- Assures compliance and with all state and federal regulations and accreditation standards. Works with the Vice Provost for the Academic Affairs to assure the VCOM Virginia Campus maintains full compliance with state and federal regulations and accreditation standards.
- Represents and serves as VCOM’s liaison with other academic organizations and agencies, including but not limited to the: American Osteopathic Association (AOA), American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), and state osteopathic organizations.
- Perform other duties as outlined in faculty contract and/or as periodically assigned by the President and the Provost.
- D.O. degree from an AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) accredited college of osteopathic medicine.
- Licensure or certification:
- Must have a valid medical license.
- Must not have any negative action on the medical license in any state in which a medical license is held or had been held.
- Must have attained AOA board certification in his/her specialty during his/her career.
- Must have at least five years of progressive academic administrative leadership experience in higher education, ideally in a college of osteopathic medicine, that includes budget management authority.
- Must have a history of at least five to ten years patient care experience in his/her specialty.

- Preferences are given to applicants who have the following skills or attributes:
- Proven experience as a leader in medical education or related field.
- Prior experience in an administrative role (Chair, Associate Dean, DME, Program Director, etc.) with experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate osteopathic medical education.
Successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check.

Working Conditions and Efforts: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position requires frequent long hours, operations at a rapid pace, multitasking to assure all areas of the program and campus meet expectations, frequent driving and occasional long-distance driving to rural sites and statewide meetings, and the ability to organize, interpret, and utilize a large volume of information, frequent meetings at the local community and university level, and attendance at statewide and national meetings.
Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to ambulate (may be with use of assisted devices); sit, stand (or accommodate for standing); use hands and vision for teaching; use office equipment such as computers; speak to large and small groups of individuals for teaching; perform moderate telephone and poly-com communication/usage; occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; drive distances of one to two hours frequently and up to six hours on occasion, and to fly to other VCOM campuses or national academic meetings.
Work environment: Office environment. Outside travel required 25% of time. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal. The pace of the work requires a rapid pace to synthesize and organize large volumes of material, while prioritizing duties.
This position is classified as an exempt position under the Executive exemption status because the primary function of the candidate/employee is management and oversight of several positions and serving as the Chief Administrative Officer of the College on the Virginia Campus.
Employment with VCOM is “at-will”.
