Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY seeks candidates for Director of Institutional Research (IR) and Assessment. The Director will develop, lead, and champion a comprehensive institutional research and assessment program to support Rensselaer’s mission and strategic goals. The Director partners with academic and administrative units to guide the strategic planning efforts that underpin the curricular, analytical, informational, reporting, and regional accreditation needs of the Institute. The Director is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating a wide range of data related to Rensselaer’s academic and business operations. The Director will work closely with central information technology staff to oversee the development of a wide range of Business Intelligence dashboards and ensure that end users have access to training in their use.

The Director of Institutional Research and Assessment plays a central role in accreditation activities at the Institute level and supports individual academic unit accreditation activities as well. Rensselaer is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The Director also oversees the institute’s annual participation in the federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) as well as the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

Qualifications Minimally, candidates must have a master’s degree in an analytical discipline such as mathematics, computer information systems or related field with an emphasis on quantitative research methods and statistics, along with seven (7) or more years of related work experience that includes data and research analysis, as well as experience in developing and maintaining positive working relationships with leadership, faculty and staff both within and outside the data management and manipulation arena.

Candidates must have the demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize results to effectively communicate with a wide variety of audiences.  Experience must include data analysis and reporting for decision support by organizational leaders, as well as experience in higher education, preferably related to institutional research. Preferably, candidates will have experience working with data dictionaries and in the use of computer applications to extract and manipulate data and produce statistical reports and analysis, and/or experience in survey design, administration, and analysis and in reporting institutional data.

Some of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reporting and survey tools and requirements; knowledge of Middle States and other accreditation organizations’ expectations concerning student learning assessment requirements. The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal skills, be a dynamic communicator, and have the demonstrated ability to be an effective supervisor.
