Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology. Both entry-level and experienced candidates are encouraged to apply. Position and Qualifications

This position has its home in the Global Politics and Societies (GPS) department which includes four separate major programs of study in sociology, religious studies, political science, and international studies and one minor program of study in social justice. Each program uses an interdisciplinary approach with some shared courses and collaborative teaching. Experiential learning is highly valued and is infused into the GPS curriculum through internships, digital course projects, study-away opportunities, and other hands-on learning experiences.

A broadly trained sociology specialist with varied research and teaching interests is sought. Candidates with a Ph.D. or ABD in sociology or a related GPS discipline, whose scholarly expertise includes race and/or critical race theory and complements existing strengths in the department, are welcomed to apply. Candidates whose courses can also contribute to one or more of the following programs – environmental studies, gender and women’s studies, and/or religious studies – are desired.

The position carries a teaching load of three courses per semester. Candidates must be able to teach Introduction to Sociology and Social Theory, as well as introductory and upper-level electives in sociology. Hollins has a strong general education program, and applicants’ courses should be able to contribute to this program.

  • Unofficial copy of graduate school transcripts.
