Senior Electrical Engineer/Project Manager

Position Summary

Rice University’s Facilities Engineering and Planning (FE&P) project management group provides comprehensive project management services supporting improvements and maintenance of the University’s infrastructure, to direct the architectural development of capital improvements and provide consultation on maintenance issues. The FE&P project management team includes professional project managers who are responsible for management of all aspects of new construction and renovation projects on the Rice campus. This team provides engineering and project management services that support improvements and maintenance of campus infrastructure, further directing the architectural development of capital improvements as well as providing consultation on maintenance issues. Potential for flexible work schedule is possible after probation period.

The Senior Electrical Engineer / Project Manger’s are highly valued and are relied on to provide electrical engineering expertise and project management leadership on every major project occurring on campus including the plants, utility distribution system, existing buildings, new buildings, and major renovations.

Salary - $ 93,100 - $125,700, commensurate with experience

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering
  • Five years of progressive experience that includes project management, experience in three phase power systems and energy metering
  • Skills :
    • Knowledge of how electrical systems interface with mechanical and plumbing systems
    • Effective written, presentation, and verbal communication - especially in communicating technical issues
    • Effectively collaborate across engineering disciplines
    • Knowledge in technical discipline/domain needed to deliver projects
    • Must exhibit resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem-solving skills in a variety of situations
    • Knowledgeable with building codes and specifications
    • Collaborative and optimistic personality
    • Highly team and quality-oriented
Essential Functions
  • Assist with defining design criteria, scope definition and justification, and developing design concepts
  • Assist with the feasibility of all new projects
  • Assist with engineering evaluation of all project design phases
  • Assist with providing technical guidance and issue resolution on all projects
  • Assist with selection of engineering design professionals and coordinating with them regarding Rice’s Design Standards through the design process
  • Assist with providing consultation on the operation and maintenance of building systems
  • Work with estimators to ensure costs are captured and project budgets are met
  • Assist with interfacing between the various groups within Facilities
  • Have strong knowledge of Rice's Design Standards and assist the effort to improve those standards and drive innovative solutions
  • Performs the full range of project management cycle: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing
  • Independently leads and directs projects requiring high levels of functional integration and involving multiple disciplines to be managed
  • Directs development of an action plan, and estimate requirements for resources, including management, labor, materials, and time required to complete project
  • Researches and recommends new methods of construction or building materials to ensure that updated procedures or cost effective alternates are applied
  • Investigates installation failures and recommend corrections
  • Participates in developing/updating project management procedures and standards with other department staff
  • Coaches and mentors Project Managers
  • Completes special projects as needed
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
  • Texas Licensed Professional Engineer in electrical engineering
  • Extensive experience with electrical sub-metering, lighting controls, power quality and selective coordination
  • Experience developing, estimating, and managing energy conservation projects
  • Experience with project management information management systems
  • Experience with office productivity software (Microsoft, Adobe, etc.)
Physical Demands
  • Be able to frequent construction site inspections at many locations, both on and off campus
  • Ability to climb a ladder
  • Must be able and willing to enter all university spaces
Work Conditions
  • Work in temporary construction office
Essential Personnel

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.
