Overview

Reporting to the Director of Transfer and Outreach in the Emma Bloomberg Center for Access and Opportunity, the Veteran Coordinator is a full-time, 36-month term position with the possibility of becoming permanent. The Veteran Coordinator will support the Transfer, Veteran, and Non-Traditional Programs team in providing academic and co-curricular programming, along with logistical support, for student veterans and their families, and share best practices for working with veterans with faculty, staff, and community partners invested in veteran access and success at Princeton University. The Coordinator is also an important member of the larger Emma Bloomberg Center for Access and Opportunity staff and supports larger Center efforts and programs to promote educational access and opportunity.



Responsibilities

The Veteran Coordinator will assist newly enrolled student veterans in making a successful transition to and navigation of academic expectations and social life at Princeton. They will liaise with campus housing, dining, financial aid, the residential colleges, and other campus partners like University Health Services and the Office of Disability Services to ensure student veterans and their families are fully settled and prepared for the academic year ahead. They will assist in planning and leading Transfer and Veteran Pre-Orientation in late August, serve as a mentor to new and returning student veterans alike, and develop and lead programming for students, staff, and faculty to help make military and Ivy League culture more legible to each other. They will advise the Director and Emma Bloomberg Center staff on policy with veteran interests in mind, and serve as an advocate for student veterans both on campus and with national partners. The Coordinator will also provide support and mentorship to veterans participating in other Center programs, like the Transfer Scholars Institute, Aspiring Scholars and Professionals, etc.

The Veteran Coordinator will take the lead in assisting student veterans and their families in navigating Veterans Affairs systems and resources, especially in the summer before their arrival and during their first semester of enrollment. More generally, the Veteran Coordinator will help the Emma Bloomberg Center liaise with external partners dedicated to student veteran success, such Student Veterans of America, the Warrior-Scholar Project, and Service 2 School, as well as internal allies like the PVETS veteran alumni group. program leaders to create synergy between initiatives.

During Princeton’s regular and transfer admission cycles, the Veteran Coordinator will work with the Senior Associate Dean of Admission on student veteran recruitment, participating in information sessions, recruitment visits, and individual conversations with prospective applicants. Once students are admitted to Princeton, the Veteran Coordinator will assist with recruitment and help provide admits with the context they need to make their enrollment decisions.

Campus Relations and External Leadership -Serve as the liaison between the EBCAO and Princeton's Office of Campus Life, ensuring that students engage in broader campus initiatives and connect with appropriate resources, particularly in cases of need or crisis. -Lead engagement efforts with broader student body population, increasing campus awareness and visibility of EBCAO work -Participate in campus committees and interdepartmental work to promote access and success at the University more broadly -Serve as a consulting expert on first-generation, lower-income, and otherwise historically marginalized student development for the Center and the broader University community and represent the Center and the University in the national college access and success community. -Other duties as assigned by the EBCAO director.

Throughout the year, and especially in the summer months, the Veteran Coordinator will assist the Emma Bloomberg Center in its broader mission to support historically marginalized student communities to, through, and beyond college, especially when its programs intersect with military-affiliated students and their interests. For example, the Veteran Coordinator may assist in planning and leading academic or co-curricular programming for the Freshman Scholars Institute, the Scholars Institute Fellows Program, Aspiring Scholars and Professionals, or the Center’s new summer intensive outreach curriculum for regional community college students.

Finally, the Veteran Coordinator will liaise with other military-affiliated communities on campus, especially in the graduate school, the alumni, and ROTC to build community and plan social events.



Qualifications

Essential qualifications:

  • Deep attentiveness to and understanding of military culture and the common academic, social, financial, and logistical concerns of veterans and their families.
  • Experience in academic and co-curricular programming for student veterans, ideally at highly selective college or university.
  • Experience navigating Veterans Affairs systems and resources and desire to help student veterans do the same.
  • Enthusiasm for community-building among and between undergraduate student veterans and various internal and external allies.
  • Highly organized, capable of multitasking, effective and responsive communicator with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity and inclusion, interpreted broadly, in higher education.

Preferred qualification:

  • Record of military service in any branch strongly preferred.
  • Administrative or teaching experience at an institution of higher education.
  • MA or advanced degree welcome.
