Job Description

This position will support the Director as the LGBTQIA+ administrative leader in the vibrant and fast-paced Office of Inclusion: Multicultural & LGBTQIA+ Student Services (IMQ). The Assistant Director specializes in working within the LGBTQIA+ student community on campus as well as working collaboratively with community organizations to identify LGBTQIA+ community resources that provide additional support to NAU students. The Assistant Director will also support multicultural programming and initiatives in the Office of Inclusion to better serve the intersections and diversity of the NAU student populations that IMQ serves. The Assistant Director, LGBTQIA+ Student Services works to support, empower, and promote the success of all students by 1) educating the campus community on the issues, challenges, and concerns of cultural, gender, and sexual identities and 2) developing and implementing programs and initiatives to sustain an inclusive campus community. Support for students includes providing leadership to student initiatives, advising student organizations centered on cultural, gender, and/or sexual identities, and developing collaborative partnerships with university departments and outside constituent groups. This position will report directly to the IMQ Director.

The Assistant Director sets goals in alignment with the mission of IMQ, NAU Student Affairs, and NAU while assuming responsibility for LGBTQIA+ and intersectional programming, developing short- and long-term goals for programs, and identifying measurable outcomes for the programs' implementation, growth, and assessment. This includes participation in the development of organizational goals and objectives, strategic planning and assessment, and participation on campus-wide committees.

Student Relationships and Services - 40%
  • Develops and provides LGBTQIA+ resources and support to students while creating a safe space and environment for walk-ins and student interactions.
  • Develops and coordinates programming in recognition of LGBTQIA+ celebration and awareness events and activities (e.g., Coming Out Month, Trans Day of Remembrance, etc.)
  • Develops and maintains educational, social, support, referral, and resource programs and services for students regarding issues of sexual and gender identities.
  • Advises student group members and leaders regarding program planning and development, group process concerns, leadership and personal development, and University policies.
  • Collaborates with on-campus and local LGBTQIA+ organizations, committees, and task forces to support LGBTQIA+ students and initiatives.
  • Serves as the lead student point of contact for students who have experienced bias incidents to provide reporting options, referrals for post-incident counseling, and assisting in any follow up to contribute to a resolution of the incident.
  • Monitors engagement of students through event attendance, personal contacts, and referrals.
  • Maintain student files, databases, and records in accordance with federal guidelines (FERPA).

Teamwork and Professionalism - 25%
  • Performs duties in alignment with IMQ's mission, values, and practices.
  • Serves as the office liaison and expert on LGBTQIA+ knowledge and trends.
  • Leads LGBTQIA+ initiatives with an intersectional lens to accomplish various projects, support the IMQ team, and foster an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Leads trainings and educational presentations regarding inclusion and diversity as well as IMQ resources to a diverse audience.
  • Manages a team of professional staff, graduate assistants, and student staff.
  • Collaborates and participates in programming with university administrators, faculty, and staff on various committees and projects to improve the student experience.
  • Builds effective working relationships with partners and liaisons across campus to support all NAU students and programs.
  • Develops and maintains a positive image of IMQ through contacts with students, parents, staff and faculty; works with a diverse student and employee population using practices of inclusion to support an effective work and service-oriented environment.

Administrative - 25%
  • Participates in the hiring and on-boarding of new professional and student employees.
  • Provides direct support to the Inclusion Coordinator, graduate assistant(s), and other office staff to plan, coordinate, and implement a diverse set of program, events, and activities.
  • Supervises and supports the learning and development of the Inclusion Coordinator, provides continuous feedback, and determines training needs.
  • Contributes to the planning of various annual office calendars as well as attends office and university events throughout the year.
  • Leads the development and implementation of various trainings, including but not limited to Safe Zone 101/102 and TRANSparency Zone 101.
  • Leads and provides administrative support for all IMQ Zone trainings.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the Office of Inclusion website.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Assessment - 10%
  • In cooperation with Student Affairs and other university offices, administers needs assessment and analyzes data to determine support and resources needed to assist in increasing student retention and graduation of our diverse student populations.
  • Completes evaluation of programming and materials to ensure students are engaged and finding the information useful.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree AND 3-5 years' experience in advisement, student mentoring programming, or student success programming, which includes 2-4 years supervising and coordinating the work of others.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree and at least two years of professional experience working with multicultural/intersectional students in higher education.
  • Candidates should have considerable knowledge of the developmental needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning students in higher education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, student advocacy, and student-centered learning and development.
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and presenting to diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and major trends/issues of LGBTQIA+ and ethnic minority students in higher education with progressively responsible experience in student development services and student success initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in program planning, implementation, and assessment.
  • Experience hiring, supervising, and cultivating a cohesive staff.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range begins at $62,996. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
