Job Description Summary / TWC Summary
Under direct supervision of U54 grant PIs/PD, Administrative and Research Infrastructure Core Director, conducts computational biology and bioinformatics studies within the Center for Biomedical and Minority Health Research ( CBMHR ). Specifically, responsible for applying computational and bioinformatic approaches and analytical tools to support biomedical and drug discovery research; submitting reports, publishing and presenting data, and applying for funding. Duties assigned to this title will require an in-depth knowledge of computational biology and bioinformatics, although other research areas in biology, chemistry or data science may be considered. The duties will require some publication experience, the exercise of independent discretion and judgment in carrying out research activities, the development of methods of research, and mentoring of students.
This is a Grant Funded position.

Doctoral degree in computational biology, chemistry, data science, or related biomedical science-related field with experience in biomedical research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Requires a minimum of 3 years of experience in biomedical research. Experience in programming languages: R, Python, Linux etc.
Preferred experience with computer programming, analytical instrumentation, artificial intelligence.
Working/Environmental Conditions
Work is performed within routine office environment with no exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions. Physical demands are usually limited to sitting or standing in one location much of the time. Some stooping, lifting or carrying objects of light weight may be required.

Essential Duties Summary
- Conduct computational biology, chemistry and bioinformatics research activities including study design, execution of various experiments, data collection, and data interpretation.
- Compile data for use in activities, such as gene expression profiling, genome annotation, or structural bioinformatics.
- Computational method application in drug discovery.
- Analyze large molecular datasets, such as raw microarray data, genomic sequence data, or proteomics data, for clinical or basic research purposes.
- Create novel computational approaches and analytical tools as required by research goals.
- Provide statistical and computational tools for biologically based activities, such as genetic analysis, measurement of gene expression, or gene function determination.
- Design and apply bioinformatics algorithms including unsupervised and supervised machine learning, dynamic programming, or graphic algorithms.
- Improve user interfaces to bioinformatics software and databases.
- Collaborate with software developers in the development and modification of commercial bioinformatics software.
- Develop data models and databases.
- Instruct others in the selection and use of bioinformatics tools.
- Communicate research results through conference presentations, scientific publications, or project reports.
- Consult with researchers to analyze problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine computational strategies.
