We are seeking a Deputy Director, Center for Social Concern(CSC). The Deputy Director, Center for Social Concern's responsibilities are split across these core functions: support the operations of the CSC, represent the Executive Director at select meetings and events, and serve as strategic leader for CSC educational processes. The Deputy Director's leadership advances the CSC's mission by managing operations and efforts toward implementing the vision and achieving the center goals. With the Executive Director, the Deputy Director supports civic engagement and civic education initiatives that further the University's commitment to democracy by addressing the systems, structures, and mindsets that constrain students' engagement as citizens of Baltimore City throughout their time at Johns Hopkins University.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

CSC Strategy & Operations

  • In partnership with, and in support of, the Executive Director for the Center for Social Concern, lead the operations of civic engagement initiatives in close consultation and collaboration with colleagues across the Student Affairs division, and in partnerships across the University including but not limited to SNF Agora Institute, Centers for Diversity and Inclusion, Student Transitions and Family Engagement, Government and Community Affairs, Center for Leadership Engagement and Experiential Development, and Economic Development.
  • Directly stewards the relationship with Development and Alumni Relations to support the considerable resources supporting CSC programs.
  • Act as a key adviser to the Executive Director for the Center for Social Concern. Identify and brief the Executive Director on key issues requiring special knowledge and understanding of programs, initiatives, goals, and objectives beyond day-to-day operational knowledge.
  • Ensure matters requiring the Executive Director's attention are developed, researched, and evaluated thoroughly before presentation.
  • Serve as a conduit for information both to the Executive Director and staff, as well as to other key stakeholders.
  • Stay current on contemporary issues of the day and build relationships in higher education, student affairs, and Baltimore City as it relates to civic engagement.
  • With the Executive Director, shape professional development opportunities and develop positive staff culture in the Center for Social Concern to propel civic engagement initiatives forward.
  • Provide strategic leadership for data collection for the CSC.
  • Provide strategic leadership on the integration and assessment of DEIB in and across all internal procedures, CSC programs, and projects in accordance with the University Roadmap on Diversity & Inclusion.

Project Management

  • Provide oversight to the development of CSC trainings, both for specific programs, and to build cohesion across programs aligned with our Education, Action, Reflection approach.
  • With the Senior Leadership Team of the Center for Social Concern, support the vision, leadership and execution of Democracy Day, Hopkins Votes and other university-wide civic initiatives.
  • Seek, research, and lead a collaborative effort with the Executive Director and other appropriate individuals to develop written materials for external grant opportunities.
  • Lead the collaborative development and implementation of a CSC plan for Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning and Change across programs and projects and provide direction on collection, management, and reporting data related to student civic engagement assessment.
  • With the Executive Director, guide the development of a strategic plan aligned with the Student Affairs Aspirations and University academic and co-curricular strategic initiatives.

Represent the Center for Social Concern

  • Build and stay in close working relationship and coordination with Development and Alumni Relations, providing direction on program reports to DAR.
  • Independently represent the CSC initiatives at internal or external meetings.
  • Interact with members of the university administration and leadership of the schools on matters related to civic engagement initiatives.
  • Attend meetings, gather information, represent CSC initiatives and the Executive Director for the Center for Social Concern, make decisions as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with administrative leadership on University-wide civic engagement initiatives.
  • Develop lexicon for affirmative, strengths-based work and collaborate with the Executive Director on invitations, speaking engagements, and professional commitments.
  • In coordination with Operations & Communications staff, address all media requests (internal and external) in accordance with Student Affairs procedures.
  • Work with autonomy and respect the vital nature of collaboration and partnership.
  • Leverage outstanding oral and written communication skills to initiate draft reports, presentations, remarks, grant applications, and other written materials and provide ongoing review, editing, and revisions in a writing partnership with the ED on all CSC initiatives, documents, and materials.
  • Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in the field of higher education, or related area required.
  • Seven (7) years progressive experience in a related field, preferably in non-profit sector management or education administration.
  • Additional education can substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Doctoral Degree preferred.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
