Job Description:

Western Illinois University seeks a committed, visionary, experienced leader to serve as Vice President for Advancement, Alumni Relations, and Athletics ("Vice President" or "VP") to oversee operations and strengthen productivity in the areas of advancement, major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, campaign planning and implementation, alumni relations, and athletics. The position reports to the President and serves as a member of the President's Cabinet. The Vice President will work closely with other senior administrators, and interact with University faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and community members to manage and strengthen Western Illinois University's fundraising practices and develop strategies to achieve the institution's desired future through the promotion of a culture of philanthropy, both internally and externally. The Vice President will also serve as the Executive Officer of the WIU Foundation as the principal liaison between the Foundation and the University and to coordinate the programs of the Foundation.

The Vice President will have the broad mandate to develop and implement comprehensive strategies for Advancement, the Foundation, Alumni Relations, and Athletics; build the operational infrastructure and capacity to increase market reach; enhance the student access and experience; and improve affordability. The VP will focus on increasing philanthropic revenue by creating and executing fundraising plans that utilize best practices for annual, major and planned gift programs, and by enhancing alumni engagement and donation rates. Seeking and cultivating strong partnerships and relationships with external and internal constituents through stewardship, communications, alumni relations, special events and other programs is critical in this position. The Vice President is required to adhere to high standards of ethical practices and conduct, serve as an active and visible member of the Western Illinois community, attend major University fundraising events, and maintain collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and community members.

The VP will be expected to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the key issues affecting units within this expansive portfolio; to shape and implement appropriate strategies, structures, and staffing; and to lead the University's ongoing comprehensive campaign. The chosen candidate must be an effective leader of people, and must exhibit the ability to develop leaders, address and manage personnel matters, and contribute to a growing, vibrant, thriving organizational and institutional culture. Successful candidates will provide direct leadership and supervision to critical campus support functions including advancement, foundation, alumni relations, and athletics.

APPOINTMENT: July 1, 2023 or negotiated start date.

COMPENSATION: Annual salary will begin at $160,000 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of three years of senior administrative experience as an advancement, foundation, and/or alumni relations professional.
  • Demonstrated record of leadership and accomplishments in advancement with a proven track record of fundraising/gift success, campaign planning and major gift solicitations from individuals and organizations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of strategies employed in all major development and alumni functions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NCAA Division I athletics program functions.
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience as an advancement, foundation, and/or alumni relations professional in a higher education setting.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body).

Academics

More than 61 undergraduate degree programs, 41 graduate programs, two doctoral programs and 16 post-baccalaureate certificate programs prepare students for a successful career after graduation.

Student Resources

More than 200 student organizations at Western provide social, academic, recreation, sports, service, and many other opportunities for students to grow and learn, develop leadership skills, and much more. Numerous concerts, lectures, films, dance performances, cultural events and more are presented and performed each year, along with numerous major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows, and a variety of service-oriented projects and activities, all in a diverse and inclusive campus environment. WIU Intercollegiate Athletics

The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
