The School of Performing Arts, within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, at South Dakota State University is seeking an Advisor to support the School’s academic programs and scholarships. We are seeking a self-motivated individual with a people-centered approach to customer service who will serve our undergraduate students in this important role. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota. This position is a 12 month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Professional Advisor will coordinate undergraduate advising and advisor training as well as participate in student recruitment and success efforts.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Provide face-to-face as well as electronic contact with those pursuing majors and minors in the School, and advise students in the scheduling of classes.
  • Coordinate or assist with recruitment efforts, ensemble tours, student outreach activities, and electronic tracking of student progress and scholarship requirements.
  • Lead the School’s career planning and placement initiatives and develop relationships with leaders in the performing arts industry and education.
  • Teach the first-year seminar for the School and may teach other courses as needed.

SALARY RANGE:

The salary range is commensurate with qualifications. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a discipline represented by the School (music, theatre, dance), Education, Counseling, or a related field:
  • Minimum of one year of experience related to student advising, student affairs, and/or classroom instruction;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a first-year seminar designed to introduce students to academic success strategies;
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills;
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position; and
  • A valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

3-5 years of experience in student advising, working with student electronic files, and/or teaching college courses in the performing arts; and

Experience related to student success in the performing arts.
