Butler’s HESA program will be the first of its kind to offer coursework that centers student well-being throughout the curriculum and offers its students opportunities to implement well-being in HESA theoretical frameworks and practical applications. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to provide vision and leadership for the HESA program. The first year of this role will be devoted to course development and program coordination with our online program management provider in preparation for the first courses to be taught in fall 2024. This position includes responsibilities related to course development, course instruction, and administrative oversight.

This is an on-campus, Indianapolis-based position. The successful candidate will have the following qualities:
  • Experience and expertise in the practice and teaching of HESA.
  • Demonstrated commitment to interrupting and eliminating inequitable outcomes, removing barriers, and creating inclusive conditions for individuals and communities regardless of any predictive identities.
  • Alignment with the COE Shared Commitments and the mission of Butler University
  • Ability to support learners from a variety of backgrounds with strong, student-centered, inclusive instructional methods in a fully online format.
  • Understanding of best/emerging practices and professional competencies in student affairs and the ability to apply that knowledge in the preparation and mentorship of future practitioners
We are particularly interested in applicants from identity groups currently underrepresented in the field of HESA.

Required qualifications: Masters degree in higher education or student affairs administration or related discipline by contract start date. Experience and excellence in providing online instruction; experience with supervision of students in HESA or related fields; evidence of sustained commitment and action towards diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings; experience working with students from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds; and demonstrated skill in communication, collaboration, and fostering collegiality. Demonstrated record of success with project management, new program development, and/or department administration.

Preferred qualifications: Earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in higher education or student affairs administration or related discipline by contract start date. Professional experience in higher education or student affairs administration; and expertise and interest in developing new courses related to centering student well-being in student affairs and college administration practice.

Expectations: Teach 9-12 credit hours of courses each semester across the fully online MS in HESA program depending on administrative responsibilities; in partnership with our online program management provider, create and/or adapt courses for online delivery and coordinate administrative aspects of the program (e.g., recruitment, retention, scheduling, admission); oversee adjunct faculty; maintain presence on campus to partner with other University divisions on multiple aspects of the program; participate in service to the COE and University.

To apply, candidates must submit:
  • A letter of application outlining qualifications and interest in the position
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Names and contact information of three professional references who can speak to the candidate’s excellence as an instructor and student affairs professional.
Materials should be submitted to Dr. Shelly Furuness, College of Education, Butler University, 4600 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46208 or via e-mail to coeHESA@butler.edu . Screening of applicants will begin March 20, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. Company

Butler University

With just over 5,000 students, we’re relatively small as far as universities go. That’s a good thing—it means classes are more personally engaging and professors are always available to help.

But in terms of opportunity, Butler University is about as big as it gets. Indianapolis is one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the Midwest. As residents, Butler students can plug right into the real-world through internships, co-ops, undergraduate research, public performances, and community partnerships. These experiences provide working knowledge and skills that students need to excel after college.

A career at Butler University means so much more than a job.  Join the dedicated, innovative, and supportive community of faculty and staff that is moving Butler Beyond.
