Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) is pleased to announce the search for the inaugural Dean of Graduate Studies.  Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the head of the Office of Graduate Studies and is responsible for leading the overall development and promotion of graduate programs, and operation of the office.  The Dean is expected to be a passionate advocate for faculty, students, and the community and to create a clear vision for the continued growth and development of graduate education at A&M-SA.

This position of Dean of Graduate Studies has the following strategic planning duties:

  • Provides leadership, supervision, direction and sets strategic planning priorities for Graduate Studies in concordance with Academic Affairs planning and the university’s mission.
  • Manages and oversees the Promoting Post baccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans grant including: budget and fiscal matters, personnel management, assessment and reporting and project management, including working within federal guidelines and with program staff, external evaluators, and stakeholders.
  • Oversees the processes by which graduate students are admitted, enrolled, supervised, retained, and awarded advanced degrees.
  • Provides accurate and timely information concerning the Graduate Studies programs and procedures.
  • Assists departments/programs in developing proposals for new graduate programs for consideration by appropriate faculty committees and university administration.
  • Convenes the Graduate Council in reviewing and approving new programs and curricular changes and gives final approval for all revisions and expansions of the university’s graduate curriculum offerings and degree or certificate requirements.
  • Allocates funding for graduate student support, including Teaching and Graduate Assistant funding, to the Colleges (academic deans) as appropriate.
  • Supports, in collaboration with Academic Affairs leadership, external reviews of graduate programs and participates in each review process as appropriate, such as assisting colleges/departments/ programs in implementing recommended improvements resulting from such reviews.
  • Supports colleges in marketing and advertising programs.
  • Oversees hiring and training of employees; plans, assigns and reviews work; establishes goals and assesses performance.
  • Acts on disciplinary issues, up to and including dismissal; addresses grievances and develops a plan for corrective action.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of existing and proposed systems and processes in support of graduate programs (enrollment, applications, curricular development) at A&M-SA.
  • Collaborates with the colleges to maintain standards and procedures by which graduate assistants are selected and supervised.
  • Oversees the review and approval of all theses/dissertations/graduate research projects
  • Works with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) on matters related to graduate education including off-campus upper-division and graduate courses and program requests and approvals.
  • Takes an active role in the activities of the Association of Texas Graduate Schools, the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools, and the Council of Graduate Schools in the U.S

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Earned doctoral degree from an accredited university.
  • Eligible for tenure as a full professor at A&M–San Antonio.
  • Ability to understand and implement policies and procedures regarding fiscal, personnel, and academic matters.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Familiarity creating and delivering innovative graduate programs.
  • Commitment to working with and supporting a diverse population.
  • Experience in developing and working with doctoral programs.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of higher education experience serving in an Administrative/management capacity. 

The candidate should be willing to work in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, and be familiar with the needs of a non-traditional, first-generation, culturally diverse student body at a growing institution.

Some of the city’s tourist attractions include the River Walk, Sea World, and the Fiesta Texas theme park. San Antonio also has 257 parks and more than 100 miles of hiking and biking trails. Additionally, San Antonio hosts several major medical facilities including: the South Texas Medical Center; Brooke Army Medical Center; UT Health San Antonio and a VA Hospital.
