Position Function:

The Department of Counseling, Higher Education Leadership, Educational Psychology, and Foundations seeks a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor to advance the scholarly goals of the Student Affairs & Higher Education Leadership graduate programs at Mississippi State University. The anticipated start date for the position is August 2023.

The Department of Counseling, Higher Education Leadership, Educational Psychology, and Foundations offers graduate programs (masters and doctoral) in Student Affairs and Higher Education Leadership, Educational Psychology, School Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, and Counselor Education. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

-teach a 3-2 course load over a 9-month contract (with the option of summer teaching, when available);
-advance a research agenda with the potential for conference presentations, scholarly publications, and external funding;
-serve on doctoral dissertation committees;
-advise master’s and doctoral students;
-contribute to collaborative program-level administrative activities related to recruitment, admissions, curriculum development, assessment, and policy review;
-serve on departmental, college, and university committees;
-actively engage in professional activities related to higher education research and practice at institutional, regional, national, and international levels;
-collaborate with the Division of Student Affairs and other campus stakeholders to create robust learning opportunities for linking theory and practice; and
-contribute positively to the welfare and enhancement of the university and the State of Mississippi through educational outreach efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Higher Education, Higher Education Leadership, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Higher Education Policy, or related discipline with a specific focus on higher education scholarship (ABD’s with a clear timeline for completion by Fall 2023 may be considered)

Preferred Qualifications:

-At least 3 years professional experience working in higher education settings as an administrator, instructor, policymaker, or leader in other relevant higher education contexts;
-Strong scholarly focus in diversity, equity, & inclusion and student development theory with intersecting interests in one or more of the following areas: global higher education & international students, history & foundations of higher education, public policy, curriculum & instruction;
-Academic and applied expertise in at least one research methodology;
-Evidence of publications, research grants, and/or scholarly presentations related to higher education and/or student affairs;
-Record of excellence in teaching in a higher education and/or student affairs program; and
-Active engagement in professional and scholarly organizations such as ASHE, AERA, ACPA, NASPA, and/or SACSA

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-Knowledge of scholarship and empirical research related to studies of higher education and/or student affairs;
-Ability to establish a sustainable research agenda that addresses contemporary topics specific to higher education and/or student affairs scholarship;
-Experience engaging varied instructional methods in the classroom (e.g., face-to-face, experiential, online, hybrid);
-Flexibility to teach across both Student Affairs practitioner preparation master’s program and research-focused Higher Education Leadership doctoral program curricula;
-Ability to engage with a small, dynamic departmental team invested in the university’s mission of advancing access, opportunity, and student success for the state of Mississippi’s diverse population.
