We are searching for an experienced Academic Services Officer II, Honors College at our Detroit campus location.

The Irvin D. Reid Honors College is seeking an Academic Services Officer II to serve as Wayne Med-Direct Coordinator and perform other related duties in the Irvin D. Reid Honors College. The successful applicant will be a collaborative, innovative colleague who is passionate about student success and committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice.

Position Purpose :

The Wayne Med-Direct program is a unique Bachelors-to-M.D. scholarship program at Wayne State that annually admits 10 high-achieving incoming first-year undergraduates. We provide mentoring, research and volunteer opportunities, leadership training, and a supportive environment in a program focused on alleviating urban health disparities. The Coordinator mainly oversees the program’s undergraduate portion, after which successful students are admitted to Wayne State’s School of Medicine.

Essential Functions:

Overseeing the Wayne Med-Direct Learning Community.



Coordinating all marketing, recruiting and admissions activities.



Representing the program via the website, printed material and events.



Planning and implementing the summer orientation program for first-year students.



Serving as a liaison to Financial Aid, Housing, Advising, Study Abroad office, and other student-service units.



Consulting regularly with the School of Medicine regarding the admissions pipeline.



Ensuring clinical and research opportunities for students.



Arranging students’ MCAT preparation.



Meeting regularly (at least once per semester) with each undergraduate program participant.

Other duties as assigned within the Irvin D. Reid Honors College.

Qualifications:

Master's degree or comparable professional degree required.



Preference will be given to candidates with 1-3 years of relevant experience in higher education including some of the following areas: academic advising, curricular planning, student affairs, enrollment services, or directly related experience.



Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives valued.



Experience with mentoring and establishing rapport with students of all backgrounds.



Demonstrated excellence in time management and organizational skills.



Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills.



Ability to work well with others, with a willingness to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and students.



Critical thinking skills and the ability to implement effective solutions to issues and/or problems highly valued.

Ability to work on a team and independently as needed.



Excellent planning, organizational, and time management skills with the ability to prioritize job responsibilities Background in student mentoring is extremely helpful.



The Campus and The Irvin D. Reid Honors College:

The Irvin D. Reid Honors College is an academic community comprising 2000 high-achieving undergraduates with majors across the curriculum. (Wayne Med-Direct students pursue their majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.) The College includes a dedicated staff of roughly a dozen individuals, plus six Honors teaching faculty and two pre-faculty fellows, who coordinate with units throughout the University to provide a curriculum that is both academically rigorous and culturally engaged. Under the leadership of Dean John Corvino and Associate Dean Elena Past, the College prides itself on a supportive and collegial work environment for all its staff and faculty.
