We are seeking a Laboratory Manager to join the Kebschull lab, an exciting and fast-paced Molecular Neuroscience Laboratory in Biomedical Engineering. The laboratory is active in two research areas: 1) development of new viral and sequencing tools to map brain circuits and 2) understanding changes to neuronal circuits across evolution and disease. To do so the laboratory uses molecular biology and synthetic biology approaches and maintains a mouse breeding colony and a zebra finch colony.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will be held solely accountable by Principal Investigator for all laboratory functions at both on-campus and off-campus sites.
  • Responsible for the coordination of all activities in a molecular neuroscience laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus.
  • Supervises, orients, trains, and develops staff of assigned laboratories. Plans, coordinates staffing patterns to effectively and efficiently support the department. Insures training and compliance of anyone working in the laboratory.
  • Participates in the specification, design, implementation, and modification of projects related to assigned labs.
  • Prepares test plan data to ensure quality and integrity. Oversees and participates in study record management and data collection.
  • Assists with preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, abstracts, invention disclosures, presentations, and funding applications.
  • Performs complex and routine testing, following both established and new protocols.
  • Responsible for compliance and audit preparation of assigned laboratory area for IRB, ACUC, and/or other regulatory reviews. Coordinates and maintains all regulatory binders, logs and audits.
  • Operates, troubleshoots, and performs preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment related to this specialty.
  • Orders supplies and acquisition of equipment and procurement of service contracts.
  • Supports and trains staff, students, residents and others. Serve as a resource for investigators and collaborators.
  • Organizes, and leads assigned meetings. Attends meetings (including national), as required.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain mouse breeding colonies.
  • Keep track of animal weights & health records, etc.
  • Will communicate and coordinate findings with veterinarians and Animal Resources staff to maintain good husbandry procedures, address colony needs and all animal issues.
  • Reform surgeries to trace neuronal circuits.
  • Prepare documentation of methods and procedures. Provide professional expertise in the creation and revision of laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and protocols.
  • Oversee inventory of laboratory supplies, including intake of new orders, record keeping, and working with technicians to ensure timely ordering of supplies.
  • Ensure compliance with the University's suite of courses in laboratory safety, biohazard, and animal welfare.
  • Demonstrate organization, problem solving, resourcefulness and flexibility.
  • Manage laboratory systems consistent with JHMI policies.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Special knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Familiarity with Microsoft office suite.
  • Must have concise, clear, and professional communication (both verbal and written).
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and cooperatively as a team member.
  • Willingness to work on some weekends and holidays for animal care related tasks.
  • Experience in molecular biology.
  • Experience with working with mice.
  • Experience in lab management.
Physical Requirements:
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling objects weighing up to 50 lbs.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • Five (5) years related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
