Sr. Research Data Manager

The Data Management Core of the Success with Therapies Research Consortium in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a Sr. Research Data Manager. They will be responsible for programming and business intelligence applications to create and maintain systems and processes data workflow across multiple platforms, research sites, and studies. They will identify, research, and resolve technical problems, as well as ensure the use of business intelligence applications enhance clinical and research decision-making capabilities.

The candidate will be responsible for implementing best practices of data management, transformation, cleaning, and analysis with the ability to design algorithms and write, annotate, and debug code to conduct data workflow. They will be responsible for designing and maintaining programming applications and business intelligence applications for data collection, relational databases, data transfer with API, and creating data visualizations and reports. They will contribute to the development and growth of the data management and analysis services by designing and workshopping processes and integrating best practices into the consortium.

This position will routinely interact with a multidisciplinary team from the Data Management Core, the Study Management Core, and the funder of the consortium, study principal investigators, study research coordinators, and vendors. Must have ability to manage multi-project workload, both development and maintenance. Depending on the task and project involved the position may be expected to lead, work as part of a team, or work individually to complete the work as necessary. They will also utilize programming languages, business intelligence, and software to create and maintain systems of data collection, workflow, application programming interfaces (API), analyses, interpretation, and reporting.

This position is an essential position which requires the incumbent to work from home during an event (weather or otherwise) that causes JHU to curtail its operations by closing some or all the university's offices.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Data Management & Workflow

  • Responsible for leading the strategic design and maintenance of electronic databases, secure data transfer from third parties such as medication monitoring devices and mobile health applications using programming language, business intelligence applications, and APIs.
  • Engage in data exploration and management with a variety of complex business intelligence tools, requiring knowledge of relational database structures.
  • Write programs to hard-code data tables and visualizations to provide automated scheduled or real-time accurate reporting of study data. Lead the creation and formatting of reports, diagrams, charts, tables, and graphs for distribution to study Sponsors, study PIs and study sites as well as for internal study management and quality control.
  • Write, decipher, and debug efficient code and establish documentation for data workflow. Identify, research, and resolve technical problems.
  • Lead the creation/optimization of data workflow processes, including managing the tech stack/data pipeline used by the research team. Utilize various programming languages as needed to perform study tasks and enhance study designs and study conduct, such as integrating third-party electronic data capture using APIs.
  • Provide a leadership role through knowledge in the area of specialization.
  • Collaborates with other analytic teams and 3rd party developers and engineers as directed.
  • Manage data collection and storage on multiple servers and electronic databases, design electronic databases, and utilize APIs to import and export data between programs and third-party portals.
  • Develop data collection and analysis methodology, including defining in detail data requirements, data sources, and proper data collection procedures, (e.g., computer programs, appropriate data fields, databases).
  • Conduct data merging, cleaning, transformation, and recoding. Write algorithms to calculate new variables and reclassify data types or fields as needed.
  • Develop and implement data collection quality assurance procedures to ensure validity and reliability of study results.
  • Proactively seek to improve or optimize data workflows between data analysts, biostatisticians, and the rest of the study team. Make recommendations for changes in the current departmental systems and processes and contributes ideas and suggestions for solutions to problems.
  • Explore modern business intelligence and data visualization tools to provide real-time, interactive data reporting capabilities to internal and external staff, study sponsors, investigators, and research coordinators
  • May serve as resource for research staff and field data coordinators regarding data issues: collection, entry, quality, and transfer.


Data Analysis

  • Design and manage statistical programming application templates and packages for data analysis, visualizations, and reporting to be utilized by team members.
  • Perform data analysis and interpretation, utilize knowledge of statistics and quantitative analysis to conduct research studies and data analyses.
  • Contribute to writing sections of manuscripts /publications and may be responsible for presenting data at meetings.
  • All other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills. Must have excellent problem solving with the ability to use programming for creative solutions to data needs.
  • Proficiency with a quantitative data analysis software such as Excel, R, Stata, and SAS. Exposure to other programming languages such as SQL, Ruby, Python, HTML, CSS, and Javascript a plus. Experience with data visualization and business intelligence tools (Power BI, Tableau). Familiarity with a variety of data formats and conversion between formats (csv, json, xml). Understanding of relational database technology and concepts.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Five years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
  • Excellent organizational, communication and writing skills required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Intermediate or advanced knowledge of REDCap.
  • Knowledge of web APIs and the HTTP protocol.
  • Knowledge of different data types and conversion between types (string, character, factor, numeric, logical, etc.)
  • Experience with data workflow tools (Rmarkdown, GitHub).
  • Expertise in R and Rstudio including libraries ggplot2, dplyr, httr.
