Communications Manager, Strategy and Student Success

About the Opportunity

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities is a leader in the Experiential Liberal Arts. The College is strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcomes applications from members of groups underrepresented in higher education administration.

The College's schools, departments, and programs—with disciplines ranging from economics and history to English, urban affairs and international affairs, form an interdisciplinary group of scholars with global perspectives and a culture of inclusion. Our expert faculty connects liberal arts education with the challenges of our time, fostering ethical reasoning and critical thought, with attention to the enduring significance of history, literature, and culture. Strategic Areas of Focus for the college's education and research throughout its global network are (1) Resilience, Sustainability, Health, and Equity, (2) Cultural Transformations, Governance, and Globalization, and (3) Network Science, Computational Social Science, Digital Humanities, and Information Ethics.

CSSH has long been committed to creating a culture of inclusion for our students, faculty, and staff. Diversity and inclusion, as well as questions of race, racism, and anti-racism, are part of all our programs, all our research centers, our three areas of strategic focus—and are always work in progress. At the same time, we focus on how modes of constructing social hierarchies, including race, gender, sexuality, class, caste, and others, intersect with one another.

Responsibilities:

The School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs is at the forefront of emerging policy change and seeks to influence that change. We drive interdisciplinary thinking and problem solving on issues of pressing concern to society at local, state, national, and international levels - from transportation, housing, energy and community development to social and environmental justice, resilience, and sustainability. Our external brand presence and our ability to share our accomplishments in research, education, and engagement with communities in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, as well as the public, are necessary to attaining our goals.

The Manager Communications Strategy and Student Success will be responsible for leading and implementing key marketing and communications initiatives to advance the strategic and operational goals of the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs. The position also supports the College of Social Sciences and Humanities' efforts to develop and implement a comprehensive strategic communications and marketing plan to strengthen the visibility, stature, and reputation of the college and its mission in the Experiential Liberal Arts and actively position it with its key constituents and critical audiences.

The Manager of Communications Strategy and Student Success will provide professional advising and career development support for all Policy School students with a focus on doctoral students. This support will include developing pathways, in collaboration with Northeastern University's Career Design team, for the incorporation of experiential opportunities into the student experience. The Manager will collaborate with faculty to implement best practices to effectively meet the needs of Policy School doctoral students. The Manager of Communications Strategy and Student Success will support strategic efforts to create a culture that fosters a seamless student experience for all Policy School students.

Under the guidance of the Director of the Policy School at CSSH, the Manager will also be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of the School's comprehensive marketing and communications plan. The Manager will work closely with the Director on new strategic initiatives and plans, coordinate with other leaders, and execute new and continuing projects while keeping the Director apprised. The Manager will develop and implement communications strategies in collaboration with the Director and the entire School staff and faculty team.

The Manager is highly organized and able to work independently as well as coordinate staff, faculty, and external constituents, and bring new initiatives to fruition with a high level of professionalism. The Manager handles all external communications for the Policy School and directs a portfolio of activities, including but not limited to: generating, processing, and editing online content for the School and affiliated websites; conceptualizing all printed and video materials; and providing general oversight of the public image of the School and its entities. The Manager will also continue to develop and utilize social media to promote all programs, initiatives, research, and faculty and student work in the school. The Manager will develop all plans for outreach, supervise outgoing communications, and work closely with technical, administrative, and Open Classroom support staff to maintain and enhance the Policy School brand and vision.

Qualifications:

Master's degree required, terminal degree preferred with a minimum of four years of marketing, communication, academic and/or career advising, and/or project management experience. Experience in a higher education setting strongly preferred. The ideal candidate must be able to handle complexity in a fast-paced environment. They must possess excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills; strong initiative; ability to think creatively, and work under tight deadlines. Experience working with lead generation strategies helpful. Proven ability to work independently, excellent communication and presentation skills, multimedia knowledge and supervisory abilities required.
