Summary/Objective

This position coordinates all aspects of the annual Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition, which is a 600-person human rights program that takes place each May for one week at American University Washington College of Law. The incumbent coordinates logistics with interpreters, housing office, various WCL offices, caterers, and other service providers. The Coordinator completes cooperation and fundraising assignments including researching, writing letters of inquiry, facilitating the negotiation of cooperation agreements and assisting with grants awarded to the Competition. The incumbent maintains financial records for the competition including expenses and manages day-to-day operations of the office. The incumbent will work with human rights lawyers and experts to guide the process of the development of hypothetical case and bench memorandum (comprehensive documents used for the Competition), development and distribution of marketing materials such as brochures and website information, recruitment of teams, volunteers and judges.

Essential Functions
  1. Manages the overall aspects of the program, including operations, event logistics, communication, outreach initiatives, and cooperation agreements.
  2. Supports the administrative needs of the program by carrying out routine office procedures including drafting of documents, copy-editing, scheduling appointments, managing email accounts, tracking budget expenses, etc.
  3. Acts as primary contact for third parties, including prospective participants, partners and service providers. Communicates with participants and manages several activities in different languages (depending on language capabilities) during the Competition.
  4. Manages marketing and outreach for the Competition, updates website and social media networks and works with colleagues for publicizing program activities and Academy initiatives.
  5. Collaborate with other Program Coordinators at the Academy to implement various initiatives. Works closely with departments at AU and WCL, to ensure all the operational needs of the Competition are met.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in human rights, law or other related social issues.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's degree.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • This position relies on the support or part-time student workers, interns and volunteers; previous supervisory experience or volunteer management skills are an asset.
  • Experience in marketing/outreach and grant proposal writing.
  • Knowledge of both Spanish and Portuguese.
  • Interest in the promotion of creative legal education initiatives.
  • Knowledge of Latin America.
  • Previous experience organizing international events or international programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and/or organize a multi-cultural event.
  • Previous international working/living experience.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Must be an independent decision maker.
  • Must be highly motivated and extremely organized with the ability to prioritize and work well under pressure and high stress.
  • Must have office experience and strong computer skills (including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Access).
  • Ability to read, write and speak Spanish and/or Portuguese, in addition to English.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to juggle a variety of projects and personalities.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States .
