The Department of Sociology and Criminology at Butler University is seeking a dynamic teacher with a strong research agenda to join our department at the level of Assistant Professor (tenure track) starting August 15, 2022. The successful candidate will have a primary specialization in criminology. Preferred secondary areas of expertise may include international sociology, urban or community sociology, or public policy, although candidates with other secondary areas of expertise will also be considered.

The teaching load for tenure track faculty is 3 courses per semester. In addition to teaching courses on criminology, there may also be opportunities to teach required sociology courses (i.e. Introduction to Sociology, Theory, Senior Seminar) as well as to contribute to interdisciplinary programs in International Studies, Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and/or Science, Technology, and Environmental Studies. The department welcomes candidates with experience in undergraduate research, internship programs, and other engaged-learning pedagogies, as well as those whose work addresses marginalized communities. Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD in Sociology, as well as those who demonstrate a commitment to building an inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population. Candidates who are ABD but expect to complete their PhD by August 2022 will also be considered.

Housed in Butler University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of Sociology and Criminology has six full-time faculty. Butler University

With just over 5,000 students, we’re relatively small as far as universities go. That’s a good thing—it means classes are more personally engaging and professors are always available to help.

But in terms of opportunity, Butler University is about as big as it gets. Indianapolis is one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the Midwest. As residents, Butler students can plug right into the real-world through internships, co-ops, undergraduate research, public performances, and community partnerships. These experiences provide working knowledge and skills that students need to excel after college.

A career at Butler University means so much more than a job.  Join the dedicated, innovative, and supportive community of faculty and staff that is moving Butler Beyond.
