Position Details

Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

The Department of Art at Sam Houston State University invites applications for a full-time, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art to begin August 2023.

We are seeking applicants with an MFA who have an interdisciplinary studio practice and the ability to teach drawing and other studio courses. Ideal candidates will be artists working in new media, installation, performance and video, hybrid forms, or who have innovative approaches that expand the boundaries of traditional mediums. Must be able to teach drawing. Artists working in social practice and willing to incorporate community engagement into the curriculum are preferred.

Duties include teaching 3 courses per semester and service on departmental committees.

Educational Requirements for the Position

Candidates must possess an MFA in art or terminal degree in a related field.

Experience Required for the Position

Teaching experience at the undergraduate level is required. The successful candidate will have an ongoing, sustainable, and engaged art practice, and be prepared to be an active faculty member who is engaged with the department, college, university, local and professional communities.

Other Requirements for the Position

SHSU is an R2, HSI, minority-majority University. Over 50% of the student body are first-generation college students. The Department of Art www.shsu.edu/art is experiencing sustained enrollment growth. About 650 undergraduates major in Graphic Design, Studio Art, Photography, and Animation, and we offer an MFA in Art and Social Practice.

The new Dana G. Hoyt Fine Arts Building includes state-of-the-art lecture halls and classrooms, studios, computer labs, and galleries. In addition to the University Art Gallery on campus, the Department exhibits student work at a Satellite Gallery in downtown Huntsville and has MFA studios in the Natural Science and Art Research Center a few blocks away. Sam Houston State University is located 70 miles north of Houston in Huntsville, TX, surrounded by the Sam Houston National Forest.
