Job Details

The History Department at St. Lawrence University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in Latin American History for one year, possibly renewable, beginning August 2023.

Though the area of specialization is open, those candidates with a secondary field in the history of the Caribbean, the Atlantic world, or Europe would be especially welcome. Experience teaching introductory undergraduate courses is preferred. Candidates who bring innovative and creative approaches to teaching and who could offer courses in one or more of the following thematic areas are especially encouraged to apply: environmental history, medicine/public health, migration studies, and/or history of media/technology.

The standard teaching load is three courses per semester, including at least one at the introductory level.

We welcome applications from candidates who bring diverse cultural, ethnic, and national perspectives to their scholarly work and teaching. Both the University and the History Department are committed to diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Such a commitment ensures an atmosphere that is diverse and complex in ways that are intellectually and socially enriching for the entire campus community. Applications by members of all underrepresented groups, as well as from individuals with experience teaching or working in a multicultural environment, are encouraged. St. Lawrence University is an Equal Opportunity Employer. (See the University diversity statement at: http://www.stlawu.edu/president/statement-diversity.)

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment is required.

Interested applicants must apply online at http://employment.stlawu.edu, uploading all required materials which are defined in the “special instructions to applicant” section.  Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to the search chair, Dr. Melissane Schrems, by e-mail (mschrems@stlawu.edu) or phone (315-229-5221).

All offers of employment are contingent upon the finalist successfully passing a background (including criminal records) check.

St. Lawrence University policy requires all employees and students to be up to date with available vaccinations against Covid-19 including, as applicable, a booster shot. Individuals may apply for a medical or religious exemption from this policy.

Company

St. Lawrence University

Nestled in New York’s North Country and just 20 miles from the Canadian border, St. Lawrence University is a collaborative community of learners who value thought and action.

Since our founding in 1856, we’ve empowered students to climb as high as the mountain peaks towering through the Adirondack region.

St. Lawrence University students aren’t afraid to ask questions, take risks, or go off the beaten path. More than half our students pursue more than one area of study, and 99% embark on real-world learning experiences; faculty-mentored research, alumni-connected internships, mission-driven service work, and off-campus study, to name a few.
