Position Description

The Department of Communication Studies at Texas State University invites applications for a Assistant Professor of Practice or Senior Lecturer. This position will serve ss Director of the Career Readiness program and teach core courses in the department. Employment would begin August 2023.

What is the Communication Studies Career Readiness Program?
The Communication Studies Career Readiness ( CSCR ) program is an innovative experience for select students to discover and examine career options in the communication field by building a personalized career pathway comprised of hands-on experience, alumni-mentoring, networking, internships, and specialized advising. This program does not follow the traditional career counseling model, the CSCR program starts with our students’ skillsets, interests, and passions to explore multiple career opportunities before narrowing.

Required Qualifications

All candidates must have:
1. M.A. in Communication Studies or Communication
2. Demonstrated record of service, research, or work with public or private sector organizations, as this candidate will serve as Director of the Communication Studies Career Readiness program
3. Experience mentoring students in professional development or internships
4. A strong undergraduate teaching record

In addition, for the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice:
1. Demonstrates current and contemporary competence in professional practice or management;
2. Documents significant years (normally more than five beyond entry level) of experience in a full-time industry, professional practice, or management capacity and potential for significant professional growth;
3. Engages in scholarship and/or professional engagement through professional presentations, publications, or similar contributions; and
4. Demonstrates leadership in relevant professional organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications for all candidates:
1. Preparedness and experience in teaching large lecture basic course ( COMM 1310: Fundamentals of Human Communication) and at least one of the following 2000 level courses (interpersonal, small group, or public speaking)
2. Preparedness and experience in teaching: Training & Development; Leadership and Communication; Communication Internship; Professional Communication; Organizational/Corporate Communication
3. Demonstrated excellence in teaching online
4. Evidence of research, professional development, externally-funded research activities, and/or community development projects
5. Willingness to engage in an administrative role and demonstrated record of service to department, university, profession, and/or communities
