Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as an Assistant/Associate Professor in Practice in Counseling to begin Fall 2023. This is a full-time non-tenure track position. The Department of Counseling offers a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Counseling that is designed to prepare a highly competent professional who can respond to the life span mental health needs of individuals in a multicultural community.

The individual selected for this position will be responsible for providing direct instruction to MEd students in counselor education and may include supervision of practicum/internship students. Summer teaching is optional and dependent on enrollment. Additionally, the individual will engage in institutional service through participation in program activities and processes such as admissions, advising, orientation, and assisting graduate students with license and certification requirements (CACREP, Texas Department of Health and Human Services, and Texas Education Agency) including maintenance of records and assessments. The individual will participate in faculty and departmental activities as well as in service to the public, profession, and constituencies of the department, college, and university as approved/assigned. Scholarly activity is not a requirement of the position.
Faculty in the Department of Counseling are expected to maintain a strong counselor identity through (1) sustained memberships in professional counseling organizations, (2) the maintenance of certifications and/or licenses related to their counseling specialty area(s), and (3) by showing evidence of sustained (a) professional development and renewal activities related to counseling, (b) professional service and advocacy in counseling. In addition, UTRGV faculty are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and to advancing the university, college, and program missions, as well as a commitment to UTRGV's guiding principles.

Department Background
The mission of the CACREP-accredited Master of Education (MEd) in Counseling is to prepare highly competent professionals who can respond to the mental health needs of individuals across the lifespan in a multicultural community. Preparation of the profession counselor is accomplished through completion of a 60-hour degree in Counseling with specializations in Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling. The vision of the Department of Counseling is to be the catalyst for the education and mental well-being of individuals, families, communities, the region, and our society-at-large through thoughtful, culturally sustaining partnerships with communities, mental health facilities, and schools, thereby demonstrating responsiveness to the mental health needs to the people of the Rio Grande Valley.

College Background The College of Education and P-16 Integration offers teacher preparation at the undergraduate level and, master's programs in Counseling, School Psychology, Educational Technology, Educational Leadership, Early Childhood, Reading and Literacy, Bilingual Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Teacher Leadership. Two Ed.D.s are also offered in educational leadership and curriculum and instruction with several specialization areas. The College of Education and P-16 Integration is fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earned doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) or a Counseling related field.
  • Professional and academic experiences with diverse populations
  • LPC or license eligible or Certified School Counselor in the state of Texas



Qualifications for consideration at the rank of Associate Professor in Practice:
  • Minimum of 4 years of full-time experiences as a faculty member in good standing in a Counseling program at an accredited university.
  • Demonstrated achievements in teaching and service commensurate with the rank
  • Supervision of students in an academic setting
  • Licensure as a professional counselor
  • Certified as an LPC supervisor


Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
  • Hold a license or be eligible for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor


OR
  • Certified School Counselor in the state of Texas.


Preferred Qualification:
  • Doctorate from a CACREP-accredited program
  • Demonstrated record of successful teaching in graduate-level counseling courses
  • Experience in direct supervision as a counselor educator
  • Experience and licensure as a clinical mental health counselor or certification as a school counselor
  • Experience with technology and software platforms for facilitating digital clinical records and processes
  • Membership and service in professional organizations
  • Bilingual, Spanish-English preferred

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
