Special Information

This is a full-time position and will be hired at the rank of either Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice or Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor beginning August 2023. This one-year position is teaching-focused and non-tenure eligible.

The School of Communication is in a $14.5 million state-of-the-art facility that includes five computer labs, digital imaging labs, a student media complex, editing bays, television broadcast studios, and modern electronic classrooms and seminar rooms. Other highlights include the Visual Design Lab (VDL), Visual Communication Print Lab and the Advanced Media Lab (AML).

Job Description

The School of Communication at Northern Arizona University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice or Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor to teach courses in the Visual Communication major. The successful applicant will teach courses from among the following areas: graphic design, typography, UX design, or other courses as required by the Visual Communication degree curriculum. The major has two emphases: Graphic Design and Animation. The successful applicant will focus on foundation courses and the Graphic Design emphasis. Applicants with no prior experience teaching are welcome to apply.

Your application should reflect your ability or potential to successfully:
  • Teach courses such as: design history, communication design, graphic design, and typography.
  • Support and promote the program and school missions centered on excellence in teaching and learning through quality instruction, curriculum enhancement, and service.
  • Provide students with frequent, timely assessment of and clear feedback regarding academic performance.

The proposed workload will be the equivalent of four courses per semester. School of Communication faculty have responsibilities in advising, mentoring, and contributing service to the school, university, and the discipline. The position begins in August 2023.

Minimum Qualifications

Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice candidates must have:
  • A bachelor's degree in studio practice, such as an Art and Design BFA, BA or BS with a major in Visual Communication, Graphic Design, Motion Design, Digital Media, or closely related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of established professional practice in Graphic Design, or closely related field, as described in the resume or CV.
  • A complete Application Package as indicated

Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor candidates must have:
  • A terminal degree in studio practice, such as MFA, MAD, MDes, MGraph, or related areas completed by August 2023
  • Teaching experience in graphic design or a closely related field as supported by CV.

Preferred Qualifications

Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice candidates should have:
  • University or college teaching experience.
  • Professional and/or creative practice in Graphic Design or closely related field, as described in the resume or CV, and as supported by professional and/or creative portfolio.
  • A high-quality portfolio of professional, scholarly and/or creative work.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion goals of the college and University, as evidenced by the diversity statement included in the application.

Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor candidates should have all of the above AND:
  • A high-quality portfolio of students' design or animation studio work.
  • Evidence of teaching experience and effectiveness of graphic design and/or motion design studio courses or promise of teaching effectiveness.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
