Associate Research Scientist

Position Summary

The Department of Pharmaceutical & Biomedical Sciences is seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of Associate Research Scientist to join a research team working to develop new cancer therapies in NIH -funded projects. They will also assist the PI in the supervision of graduate students and undergrads in the lab.

The Associate Research Scientist position is a faculty position analogous to the Associate Professor rank. Under normal circumstances, candidates for appointment or promotion to this rank must have had four years of experience at the Assistant Research Scientist level (or equivalent) either at the UGA or another institution. A candidate must have demonstrated consistency and direction in his/her research or research service and must have achieved a substantial measure of accomplishment or creative contributions in the field of specialization.

The faculty member will be located in Athens, Georgia, home of the University of Georgia. Athens is ideally situated in the rolling hills of northeast Georgia, yet is less than one hour from metropolitan Atlanta, and within easy access to the scenic Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee mountains.

Minimum Qualifications

Should possess a PhD, MD, PharmD, or equivalent professional degree in a field related to biological sciences.

Additional Requirements

• Knowledge and skills in molecular biology, cell biology, and drug development are required.
• Must have at least four years of experience at the Assistant Research Scientist level (or equivalent, such as Research Assistant Professor).
• At least 5 years’ experience with animal studies and skills in small animal imaging are required.
• A track record of significant scientific contributions with publications in peer-reviewed journals and intellectual property protection is required.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

• At least 5 years’ experience in cancer therapeutics and cancer chemoprevention is preferred.
• Teaching capability in biological sciences is preferred.
• Preference will be given to applicants who have track records receiving federal funding as either the Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Principal Investigator (co-PI).

• Outstanding communication skills are necessary, including the ability to develop, implement, and clearly communicate drug discovery strategies.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

• Maintain the high ethics and productivity in the PBS department in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Georgia.
• Help supervise the postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the College of Pharmacy.
• Involved in the teaching of the Pharm D as well as BS and graduate courses.
• Develop scientific leadership, especially in the area of cancer drug development.
• Develop an independent grant funding to support the research efforts of the College of Pharmacy.
• Lead independent research projects.
• Serve as lab supervisor and will be full accountable for the lab safety, chemical management, hazardous waste management, and maintenance of the UGA Chematix and perform appropriate action to achieve goal of EPA set by the UGA ethical policies.
• Maintenance of all lab equipment’s on a regular basis, writing of the SOP for the instrument operation, etc.
• Participate and present the research findings among and the scientific community.
• Write scientific articles for publication in the peer-reviewed journals.
• Present, discuss and submit the progress report of the lab to the PI.
• This position requires strong oral and written communication skills.
