Job Description

The individual will perform experiments based on the injury and regeneration of skeletal muscle. They will assist in the design, development, and implementation of experimental approaches to study regeneration of skeletal muscle, recovery of its vascular supply, and its motor innervation as well as how these interactions are affected by advancing age and experimental intervention. The position requires a PhD in a related biological science (e.g., Veterinary Medicine) with advanced training in muscle biology, experience designing and executing experiments, small animal (mouse) surgery and postoperative care. Experiments entail injuring skeletal muscle surgically, chemically, or genetically and examining recovery (regeneration) over a time. Procedures include evaluating microvascular and neuromuscular structure and function at defined time points during recovery. Complementary measures include video microscopy, fluorescent imaging, histology, immunostaining, genomics, and proteomics. The individual will be responsible for acquiring, analyzing, and preparing data for graphical, written, and oral presentation, the breeding and genotyping of mice, and training other laboratory personnel.

Specific Responsibilities include:
  • Performing surgical and recovery procedures in mice.
  • Acquiring, analyzing, and interpreting tissue samples using histology, immunostaining, and imaging.
  • Evaluating muscular, neuromuscular, and microvascular structure and function in experimental preparations.
  • Overseeing operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Interacting with and training other laboratory personnel as appropriate.
  • Overseeing breeding and care of mouse colony.
  • Using best practices for record keeping and data sharing.

Salary

$55,208 - $80,000

Salary commensurate with experience

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in a related biological science (e.g., Veterinary Medicine)
Postdoctoral training in muscle biology with advanced skills as a researcher who can work independently
