Job Description

Step Up is a community program of Hope College that mentors underrepresented middle school students for academic success and personal potential. The coordinator will oversee the daily program, future program development, fundraising, and public relations.

The Step Up Coordinator’s position is a part-time position; 11 months per year, 28 hours per week position with on-site work from late August through May and two months in the summer. School year hours include Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 – 5:00 pm, plus 22 additional hours per week and occasional evening or weekend hours. Summer hours include 8 weeks of 8am – 2pm with additional planning hours.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Programming
    • Plan and implement school year and summer programing o Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer mentors
    • Maintain student files and records
    • Coordinate program transportation, assessments and evaluations
    • Recruit, enroll, and supervise Step Up students
    • Organize student/parent workshops
  • Contacts and collaborations
    • Maintain student, family, school, and community contacts
    • Collaborate with CASA and Upward Bound, as well as other campus and community resources
  • Assist with grants, donations, and fundraisers as requested
  • Public relations: Oversee program newsletters and socialmedia
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Supervision: Step Up is part of the CASA -Step Up- Upward Bound program continuum and a member of the Educational Outreach Office at Hope College.

Qualifications

Desired skills and experiences include: (1) college degree and at least 2 years of experience in education, social work, non-profits, or a related field, (2) a self-starter and self-directed individual, (3) demonstrated interpersonal skills with all constituents, including middle-school youth, (4) demonstrated understanding of and experience with diverse populations, (5) Spanish conversational required, (6) strong organizational and writing skills, (7) allegiance with the Step Up , Upward Bound , CASA , and Hope College missions.

Physical Demands

This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
