Job Description

Northern Arizona University is seeking teacher-scholars with a commitment to student-centered teaching and learning to support its mission to transform lives and enrich communities through high-quality academics and public service. Qualified applicants are invited to apply for this non-tenure track appointment which will begin August 2023 at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in Communication Studies.

The Communication Studies unit within the School of Communication (SoC) at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is searching for two (2) Assistant Teaching Professors (non-tenure track) to begin Fall 2023. Assistant Teaching Professors typically teach four courses each semester, hold a service assignment, and are fully participating members of the faculty in the School of Communication and at NAU.

The Communication Studies unit is committed to developing student abilities in ethical and critical thinking to enhance their engagement as people, professionals, and citizens in a diverse and challenging world. Our program combines theory with active learning to prepare students to meet the challenges of personal, professional, and civic life requiring proficiencies in relational, group, and public communication.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the potential for excellence in student-centered teaching, active-learning, and a willingness or ability to hold service assignments at the unit, college, and university level. The ideal candidate will also be able to demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and serving Hispanic/Latine, First-Generation, Indigenous, and/or underrepresented student populations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Communication, conferred by date of appointment, plus one year teaching experience.
  • All candidates should have a demonstrated ability to teach at least three of the following six courses: Communication Theory; Communication Analysis; Introduction to Interpersonal Communication; Introduction to Research in Communication Studies; Teams, Leadership, & Communication (group); and Race, Gender, & Media.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; experience working with diverse student populations, commitment to diversity on campus, and commitment to diversity pedagogy/curriculum.
  • Willingness to do service at the unit, college, and/or university level (as expressed in application materials, with preference for those with demonstrated records of service).
  • Record of excellence in teaching, including student-centered, active-learning, and/or service-learning teaching, as demonstrated by recent teaching evaluations and/or other evidence (e.g., sample syllabi, classroom observations, awards, etc.).
  • Record of effectively working with Hispanic/Latine, First-Generation, Indigenous, LGBTQ+ and/or underrepresented student communities.
  • Willingness to teach a variety of online graduate classes (as expressed in application materials, with preference for prior experience).
  • Ability to teach one or more of the following undergraduate courses: Interviewing, Mediation & Conflict Management, Relational Communication (advanced interpersonal), Environmental Communication, Political Communication, Nonverbal Communication, Persuasion, Social Movements, and/or Rhetorical Criticism.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
