Job Description Summary
The Temporary Seasonal Gardener assists with a broad range of garden maintenance tasks and frequently requires the expenditure of physical labor and the use of motorized equipment and other tools. Responsibilities include trimming, mowing, weeding, watering, planting, pruning, and weed control. Some weekend work is required.
Job Description
- Assist with all garden tasks including but not limited to
weeding, pruning, planting, mulching and turf care.
- Learn to properly identify weeds and implement control
methods.
- Work with horticulture team members to mow and string trim the
Arboretum on a weekly basis during the growing season.
- Assist with leaf clean-up in the Fall.
- Work in the garden on a rotating weekend schedule.
- Participate in the Horticulture Department's project
days.
- Perform additional duties as requested.
Must learn to operate the following garden machinery:
- Small Equipment - push mower, string trimmer, leaf
blower, snow thrower.
- Large Equipment - golf cart, riding mower, backhoe,
tractor, dump truck
- Arborist Equipment - chainsaw, chipper
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- 0-1 years' experience in horticulture work required.
- Interest in horticulture/plants demonstrated.
- Be able and willing to communicate with Arboretum
visitors.
- Be able and willing to work independently and as part of a
team.
- Be able and willing to work in all weather
conditions.
- Be able and willing to lift at least 25 lbs.
- A valid driver's license is required.
About Morris Arboretum:
The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, with its beautiful 92-acre public garden, is located 15 miles from campus, in Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill. It was once a private estate and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Morris Arboretum is a living history museum, and research institution focused on environmental conservation and education, as well as a beautiful garden.
