Job Description Summary
The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.
The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the “go-to” organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.
Continuation of all GTP positions is contingent upon funding.
Job Description
Our Vector Program group, including Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MS&T), Analytical Sciences and Technology (AS&T) and External Manufacturing (EM) teams, provides Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) support for basic, translational and clinical research for adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector-based therapeutic products. To support the rapid expansion of the Vector Program, a newly formed Technical Operations Engineering group will assist with all aspects of equipment & facilities design and management.
We are currently recruiting a Process Engineer III who will be part of a growing engineering organization supporting all groups within the Vector Program in addition to our cGMP manufacturing team. As a Process Engineer III, under the direction of the Process Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for assisting Vector and GMP personnel with all aspects of the equipment life cycle, including equipment specification, installation, qualification, maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting. These responsibilities may include activities including deviation investigations, authoring equipment functional tests, and reviewing facility designs to support introduction of new equipment or processes.
Successful candidates will have a degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical etc.) or related discipline and 3 - 6 years of experience in a lab or manufacturing environment in a regulated industry (Food/Med Device/Pharma/Biotech or related). They must be detail oriented, have excellent written and oral communication skills, and be able to work independently as well as within a dynamic cross-functional team. Additionally, basic mechanical, electrical, or IT skills are highly desirable. Finally, demonstrated interest in biotechnology and a drive to understand the science supported by the engineering group is critical to your success in this position.
This position will require you to work on-site during all scheduled working hours and may require some weekend hours as needed to support lab operations. This position will be on call for emergency responses.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical,
Electrical, Biomedical etc.) or related discipline and 3 to 5 years
of experience
- Experience leading or acting as an individual contributor for
projects exceeding $250k
- Experience working with contract manufacturing organizations,
customers, or other outside organizations
- Knowledge of cGMP's and how they pertain to equipment and
facility design
- Basic mechanical skills
- Strong organizational drive and skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to interface with scientists, vendors, and many other
groups
- Technical interest in biotechnology /
biomanufacturing
- Intermediate IT and/or programming abilities
- Basic electrical skills
- Basic mechanical design (CAD) abilities
- Experience (internship/Co-Op/full time) in biotechnology,
pharmaceuticals, medical devices, or another regulated
industry
