Position Summary:

Individual colleges within the Community College system provide child development centers, offering child care, child development, nutrition and related services for the pre-school children of students, staff and citizens of communities in their respective service areas. The colleges also offer academic programs in early childhood education. The child development centers provide the collateral function of serving as laboratories for practical experience by early childhood education students.

The Child Development Teacher plans and carries out learning activities for pre-school children in a college child development center as well as assisting early childhood education students of the Community College in gaining practical pre-school teaching experience as part of their curriculum.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree Early Childhood education or an appropriately related field together with two (2) or more years of experience in a related field; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:
  • Early childhood education.
  • Child development and learning principles and applications.
  • Childcare administration.
Special Requirements:
  • Hold a valid First Aid, CPR, and Medication Administration Certificates approved by the OEC Division of Licensing; Health & Safety Training, Mandated Reporter Training
  • Incumbents must be fingerprinted through the Office of Early Childhood and approved to work in a childcare setting
  • Head Teacher Certificate for preschool age children or Level A Early Childhood Teacher Credential (ECTC)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three (3) or more years classroom teaching experience in an early care and education (preschool) group setting in a NAEYC accredited program
  • Student teaching experience or working in a college lab school setting with knowledge of Creative Curriculum and Reggio-Inspired approach
  • Experience supervising, evaluating and mentoring student teachers, and volunteers
  • Experience working with young children with challenging behaviors and special needs
  • Knowledge and experience of developmentally and appropriate teaching strategies including but not limited to the Cycle of Intentional Teaching, writing learning experience plans using the CT ELDS and CT DOTS Assessment tool and creating children's portfolios.
  • Experience in parent engagement such as conducting parent conferences, writing newsletters, and use of a digital app in communicating with parents
  • Bilingual: English and Spanish or English and Chinese
Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Director of Child Development Center or other administrator, the Child Development Teacher is accountable for contributing to the development and care of children enrolled in the College’s Child Development Center through effective performance in these essential functional areas:
  • Teaching the Center’s children.
    • accountable for providing age and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for assigned children in the College’s Child Development Center.
  • Overseeing student teachers’ academic lab experience.
    • accountable for contributing to the practical experience of the College’s early childhood education students.
  • Parent communications.
    • accountable for communicating with parents about their children’s progress as well as about the services of the Center.
  • Participating in Center administration.
    • accountable for contributing to the effective management of the Center by participating in its administration.
In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings. These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

Starting Salary:

Anticipated Salary; $54,432 approximate annual plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits.
