Position Description

The Graduate Programs Office at Mays Business School, Texas A&M University, invites applications for a full-time, Academic Professional Track (Non-Tenure) position with a 9-month academic appointment beginning Fall 2023 in the area of Communications. Applicants will be considered for the faculty titles of Assistant Professor of Practice, Associate Professor of Practice, Professor of Practice, Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Principal Lecturer depending on qualifications.  

The Graduate Programs Office oversees all specialized and college-wide masters programs offered by Mays Business School. College-wide programs housed within the Graduate Programs Office include the full-time Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Executive MBA, Professional MBA, Masters in Analytics, and Masters in Business. The Executive MBA, Professional MBA, and Masters in Analytics programs are offered at the CityCentre location in Houston, Texas (the Houston programs offer hybrid delivery with both traditional and online enrollments).

Successful candidates will be expected to teach business communications to students enrolled in MBA programs (Full-Time MBA, Professional MBA, and Executive MBA), MS Business, and MS Analytics (on a consultative basis). Topics include written communication, oral communication (in varying formats, such as in person, virtual, large groups, small settings, formal, informal), and executive presence. Service to the unit is also expected. This includes such activities as attending events for current, former, and prospective students, observing students’ presentations in other courses, and serving on committees.    

This position would office in College Station, with frequent travel to Houston, as programs hold classes and events in both College Station (Full-Time MBA and MS Business) and Houston (Professional MBA, Executive MBA, and MS Analytics). Responsibilities in Houston may include occasional nights and weekend teaching and activities.

 

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are:

For appointments at the Assistant, Associate or Professor of Practice level, applicants must have, at the minimum, a master's level degree appropriate for the field in which the faculty member will teach, or have distinguished careers in the private sector and/or government service. Length of experience depends on title as described below.

  • Assistant: less than 5 years teaching, approximately 10 years industry
  • Associate: at least 5 years teaching and 10 years industry OR approximately 15 years industry
  • Full: at least 10 years teaching and 10 years industry OR approximately 20 years industry

For appointments at the Clinical Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, a PhD appropriate for the field in which the faculty member will teach is required. There may be additional requirements depending on the specific faculty title.

For appointments at the Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Principal Lecturer level, a master's level degree appropriate for the field in which the faculty member will teach and/or commensurate experience is required. There may be additional requirements depending on the specific faculty title.

Demonstrated excellence in training or teaching business communication topics.

In addition, other desired qualifications and abilities include:

  • Understanding emerging technologies used in business communications (Tableau, Power BI, etc.).
  • Experience teaching or training early, mid-career, and senior professionals.
  • Experience working in a business environment.
  • Comfort with multiple pedagogical delivery options, including large in-person classes, dual delivery, one-on-one coaching/teaching, etc.
  • Advanced PowerPoint skills.
  • Data visualization skills using Excel, PowerBI, Tableau, and similar.
  • Ability to coach students on their executive presence by increasing their confidence and emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to teach conflict management, feedback delivery, and other interpersonal communication skills for managers.
  • Use of technology for teaching and grading writing (Grammarly, Flesh-Kincaid) and presentation skills (PitchVantage or other).
  • Ability to teach students to write for conveying critical thinking and tools/frameworks for creating logical arguments in writing.
  • Engage in the college assessment efforts related to communication (written and oral) as well as critical thinking (as it relates to communicating critical thinking).
  • Collaborate with other faculty members and Career Management Center, so students transfer knowledge gained in this course throughout the entire program.
